{"id":10997,"date":"2012-06-03T12:34:53","date_gmt":"2012-06-03T20:34:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=10997"},"modified":"2012-06-04T09:52:33","modified_gmt":"2012-06-04T17:52:33","slug":"watch-anais-mitchell-perform-in-manchester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2012-06\/watch-anais-mitchell-perform-in-manchester\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch Anais Mitchell Perform in Manchester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Anais Mitchell&#8217;s<\/strong> masterful album, <strong>Young Man in America<\/strong>, is one of a handful of albums that have been dominating our listening time <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2012-03\/anais-mitchell-solo-expanded-and-covered-by-bon-iver\/\">as we wrote earlier this year<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 Mitchell is one of our most gifted songwriters, and Young Man in America bears this out once again with its deceptively simple songs.\u00a0 The modern folk songs on the album speak to youthful vantages of America (imagine that) and their\/its growing pains and prizes.\u00a0 Mitchell&#8217;s incisive lyrics always manage to put a fine point on matters.\u00a0 Any songwriter who can write lines like the following deserves our strictest attention:\u00a0 \u201c<em>Now that he\u2019s gone away there isn\u2019t anyone to tell me if I\u2019m a diamond or a dime-a-dozen,<\/em>\u201d and <em>&#8220;Your daddy didn&#8217;t leave a will, he left a shovel and a hole to fill.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 To cap it off, Mitchell&#8217;s voice beautifully ranges from <strong>Joanna Newsom<\/strong> to <strong>CocoRosie<\/strong> to <strong>Rickie Lee Jones<\/strong>, and all points in between.\u00a0 Highly recommended.<\/p>\n<p>To get more of a feel, check out <strong>Ana\u00efs Mitchell &amp; The Young Man Band<\/strong> (<strong>Noah Hahn, Rachel Ries<\/strong> and <strong>Ben Davis<\/strong>) performing <em><strong>Dyin&#8217; Day<\/strong><\/em> (riffing on Abraham and the near-sacrifice of his son Isaac) and <em><strong>Ships<\/strong><\/em> from the new album, and <em><strong>Cosmic American<\/strong><\/em> off of her album, <strong>Hymns For The Exiled<\/strong>, all as recorded last night at <strong>The Ruby Lounge<\/strong> in <strong>Manchester, England<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After the live performances, we must re-post the official video for one of the finest songs written this or any other year, <em><strong>Coming Down<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 When Mitchell sings the chorus, you can&#8217;t help but hear and feel deep within the ineffable cessation of effervescence.\u00a0 Within or without, it can only be prolonged so long.\u00a0 <em><strong>Please, please don&#8217;t leave, easy feeling, don&#8217;t leave me like that, not yet, don&#8217;t set me free&#8230;.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=N7fWKfrKmJI&#038;feature=channel&#038;list=UL<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eXnIzjSdlkc&#038;feature=channel&#038;list=UL<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5Gm27Q8u6I8&#038;feature=channel&#038;list=UL<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Anais Mitchell - &quot;Coming Down&quot;
