As a tribute to The Band’s<\/strong> late Levon Helm<\/strong> over the weekend at the Newport Folk Festival<\/strong>, My Morning Jacket<\/strong> covered the Band’s It Makes No Difference <\/em><\/strong>with the help (?) of Brittany Howard<\/strong> of Alabama Shakes<\/strong>.\u00a0 Though Rick Danko<\/strong> sang the original, Levon Helm<\/strong> sang the song at the Newport Jazz Festival in 2010.\u00a0 Check out below (at 47:35) the winning version (despite some pitchy,<\/strong> off-key<\/strong> moments<\/strong> from Howard, particularly on the chorus–Brittany, they make these things called “in-ear monitors”–you might want to try a pair).\u00a0 Highlights in the song are Jim James’ vaunted vocals, the usual gutty guitar work (at 52:28) of Carl Broemel<\/strong> and the sax work of Clint Maedgen<\/strong> (at 52:57).\u00a0 Perhaps even more compelling is the intensity of Conor Oberst’s<\/strong> participation on Smokin From Shootin\u2019<\/strong><\/em> (also with Ben Sollee<\/strong>), which begins at 54:59.\u00a0 MMJ never fail to captivate.<\/p>\n
