{"id":12569,"date":"2012-09-28T15:37:14","date_gmt":"2012-09-28T23:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=12569"},"modified":"2012-09-29T07:22:24","modified_gmt":"2012-09-29T15:22:24","slug":"review-photos-and-video-band-of-horses-special-show-at-the-troubadour-92712","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2012-09\/review-photos-and-video-band-of-horses-special-show-at-the-troubadour-92712\/","title":{"rendered":"Review, Photos and Video&#8211;Band of Horses&#8217; Special Show at The Troubadour 9\/27\/12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ElectricWide3Final.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-12573\" title=\"ElectricWide3Final\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ElectricWide3Final-650x340.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ElectricWide3Final-650x340.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ElectricWide3Final-150x78.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ElectricWide3Final-450x236.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We ventured down last night to the hallowed <strong>Troubadour<\/strong> in LA for an intimate <strong>Band of Horses<\/strong> show that closed out this leg of their tour.\u00a0\u00a0 Having tried for close to a decade to catch these favorites, we had never been able to sync up our concert cantors with this great rockin&#8217;-country band.\u00a0\u00a0 This has been a bountiful year for quality concerts (<strong>Radiohead<\/strong> and <strong>Bon Iver<\/strong> at the <strong>SB Bowl<\/strong>, <strong>My Morning Jacket\/Iron &amp; Wine<\/strong> at the Wiltern, etc.), but the un-reined Band of Horses proved last night why they are amongst the best live bands in America in any category.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/TylerTroubBestFinal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-12574\" title=\"TylerTroubBestFinal\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/TylerTroubBestFinal-600x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/TylerTroubBestFinal-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/TylerTroubBestFinal-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/TylerTroubBestFinal-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/TylerTroubBestFinal.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Band of Horse&#8217;s lead guitarist, <a href=\"http:\/\/tylerramsey.com\/\"><strong>Tyler Ramsey<\/strong><\/a> (above), opened with a captivating set of high, lonesome picking and singing.\u00a0 If you haven&#8217;t heard Ramsey, he has released several solo recordings, all well-worth seeking out, and especially his last album <strong>The Valley Wind<\/strong> (released a year to the day from last night&#8217;s show).\u00a0 You can listen to the title track and another at his site linked above, or below. Ramsey is a subtle guitar virtuoso whose songs are poignant and well-crafted, and whose vocals lean towards young <strong>Neil Young<\/strong> (all good at Chez Lefort).\u00a0 Ramsey brought out Band of Horses&#8217; <strong>Ben Bridwell<\/strong> to add dynamic harmonies as they closed out Ramsey&#8217;s set with a sterling cover of <strong>Jules Shear&#8217;s<\/strong> (no mention of <strong>Cyndi Lauper<\/strong>, who made the song famous) <em><strong>All Through The<\/strong><\/em><strong> Night<\/strong>.\u00a0 Check out the duet on the song after his song <strong>Band of Horses<\/strong> hit the stage champing at the bit to show all in attendance that they can throttle and rock a stage like few bands in America can.\u00a0 They wasted no time staking their claim to tonight&#8217;s trifecta, opening with their anthemic rocker <em><strong>Knock Knock<\/strong> <\/em>off of their superlative new album, <strong>Mirage Rock<\/strong>.\u00a0 For a feel, <strong>Band of Horses<\/strong> riled up the crowd with their relentless attack.\u00a0 <strong>Ben Bridwell&#8217;s<\/strong> otherworldly vocals were rightly in the spotlight&#8211;we marveled at his unerring ability to rip those stunning vocals out of his slight, sinewy body.\u00a0 And the other members galvanized with their playing and harmonizing.\u00a0 <strong>Ramsey&#8217;s<\/strong> and <strong>Ryan Monroe&#8217;s<\/strong> evocative harmonies added justly (though they could have been turned up a bit).<\/p>\n<p>The band also knows its powers and when to rein in the rock and let their softer side shine.\u00a0 They vacillated between power and poignancy with aplomb.\u00a0 Many in the audience sang along, and a few shed a tear or two along the way.\u00a0 Band of Horses has found their audience thanks to their dynamic songwriting and oblique lyrics that nonetheless manage to reverberate and resonate with their fans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BenTylerRock.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-12580\" title=\"BenTylerRock\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BenTylerRock-650x417.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BenTylerRock-650x417.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BenTylerRock-150x96.jpg 150w, show, LA&#8217;s\u00a0&#8217;70s country-rock influence wafted over the proceedings, with homage being paid\u00a0 to such scene stalwarts as <strong>Gram Parsons<\/strong> (they covered Parson&#8217;s superb <em><strong>Song For You<\/strong><\/em> for recently married friends in the audience),<strong> The Eagles<\/strong> (the riffs in new song, <em><strong>Electric Music<\/strong><\/em>, are genuflections to the <strong>Eagles&#8217;<\/strong> <em><strong>Already Gone<\/strong><\/em> and to Parson&#8217;s pal <strong>Keith Richards<\/strong>), and <strong>Neil Young<\/strong> (they closed the night by covering <strong>Young&#8217;s<\/strong> powerful anthem <em><strong>Powderfinger<\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Early on in their set the band played like there was no tomorrow, with band members maintaining the din between songs while the other members prepared to rip into the next (<em><strong>Knock Knock, NW Apt., Is There a Ghost <\/strong><\/em>and<strong> <\/strong><em><strong>The Great Salt Lake<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>were played without a pause).\u00a0 Bridwell and Monroe seemed to particularly enjoy the pounding vernacular.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BenSoloNoGuitarClose.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-12581\" title=\"BenSoloNoGuitarClose\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BenSoloNoGuitarClose-578x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"578\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BenSoloNoGuitarClose-578x600.jpg 578w, 385w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the evening rolled on, the band played most (if not all) of the crowd&#8217;s favorites, rendering stellar readings of\u00a0<em><strong>Infinite Arms<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>No One&#8217;s Gonna Love You<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Detlef Schrempf<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Laredo<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Ode to LRC<\/strong><\/em> and, of course, &#8220;fake-last song&#8221; <em><strong>Funeral<\/strong><\/em>, which ended their main set and which you can see\/hear immediately below from the Troubadour.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Band of Horses - The Funeral\" width=\"635\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8AO6fhcpqcw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>For the encore the band came out and played a beautiful new acoustic song, <strong><em>Slow Cruel Hands of Time<\/em><\/strong>, off the new album, followed by a lovely <em><strong>No One\u2019s Gonna Love You<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 And then, citing an impending Central Park concert headlined by Neil Young, they closed out the night by lighting the powder-keg with an emphatic, blistering cover of Young&#8217;s <em><strong>Powderfinger<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 It was a perfect end to a powerful evening of music.\u00a0 Check out the setlist and the show poster
