{"id":12837,"date":"2012-10-14T07:31:11","date_gmt":"2012-10-14T15:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=12837"},"modified":"2014-05-09T07:44:52","modified_gmt":"2014-05-09T15:44:52","slug":"hardly-strictly-bluegrass-festival-howe-gelbs-giant-giant-sand-day-iii-highlight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2012-10\/hardly-strictly-bluegrass-festival-howe-gelbs-giant-giant-sand-day-iii-highlight\/","title":{"rendered":"Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival&#8211;Howe Gelb&#8217;s Giant Giant Sand is Day III Highlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/1349719961-img_8227.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-21271\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/1349719961-img_8227.jpg\" alt=\"1349719961-img_8227\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/1349719961-img_8227.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/1349719961-img_8227-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/1349719961-img_8227-450x299.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the third and last day of the ever-invigorating 2012 <strong>Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival,<\/strong> the great weather and magnificent music continued unabated.\u00a0 On this day, we frankly had lower expectations but higher anxiety over the circus crowds.\u00a0 In the end our expectations were far exceeded, and though the crowds were daunting, they were not insurmountable.<\/p>\n<p>The clear highlight of the day was <strong>Giant Giant Sand<\/strong>, one of <a href=\"http:\/\/howegelb.com\/\"><strong>Howe Gelb&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> many fine collectives.\u00a0 While we have known and liked Gelb&#8217;s music and discography, we had never seen him live, and nothing could prepare us for the sounds crafted onstage by the incredibly talented Gelb and his band of cohorts out of Tucson.\u00a0 The depth and variety of the music was stunning, shifting between southwestern high-country rock, cumbia, bolero, twang and country-folk balladry and jazz.\u00a0 Gelb is a magnanimous leader, letting the other players (great singers\/players <strong>Brian Lopez<\/strong> and <strong>Gabriel Sullivan<\/strong>) take the lead.\u00a0 To give up the spotlight in this high-level setting speaks volumes of the heart of <strong>Howe Gelb<\/strong>.\u00a0 Later in the set the chameleonic and multifaceted <strong>Gelb<\/strong> suddenly downshifted to electric piano and subtly sang and played a beautiful jazz ballad (with fine trumpet accompaniment) of the highest order.\u00a0 It was as if the love child of <strong>Mose Allison<\/strong> and <strong>Diane Schurr<\/strong> was delivered and delivering.\u00a0 Gelb and the Giants closed out with a rollicking rocker of the highest order (with <strong>Led Zeppelin&#8217;s John Paul Jones<\/strong> on mandolin), leaving the crowd awestruck and wanting more.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example of Howe Gelb performing in the future:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0pnxSCNZYgg\" width=\"625\" height=\"425\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the third and last day of the ever-invigorating 2012 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, the great weather and magnificent music continued unabated.\u00a0 On this day, we frankly had lower expectations but higher anxiety over the circus crowds.\u00a0 In the end our expectations were far exceeded, and though the crowds were daunting, they were not insurmountable.
