{"id":13712,"date":"2012-11-26T08:21:05","date_gmt":"2012-11-26T16:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=13712"},"modified":"2012-11-26T16:01:00","modified_gmt":"2012-11-27T00:01:00","slug":"watch-tame-impala-on-jools-holland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2012-11\/watch-tame-impala-on-jools-holland\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch Tame Impala on Jools Holland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Tame Impala<\/strong> is another band that has not previously tamed us (and if we had to pick a muscle-car, we were always bigger<strong> Bel Air<\/strong> fans).\u00a0 Leader <strong>Kevin Parker<\/strong> and band attempt to walk that fine line between enhancing the currently-fashionable mid-&#8217;60s psych-fuzz sound and merely rearranging the deck chairs on the <em><strong>H.M.S. Revolver<\/strong><\/em> or the <em><strong>SS Revivalist<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Having lived through the earlier era, we are predisposed to shrug off new purveyors of the old sound (<strong>Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees<\/strong>, etc.) unless they really enhance the ole tropes.\u00a0 And this is why we have heretofore resisted Tame Impala.\u00a0 We just haven&#8217;t been &#8220;hearing it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But <strong>Tame Impala<\/strong> has been receiving near-universal raves for their recently released album, <strong>Lonerism<\/strong> (produced by <strong>Dave Fridmann<\/strong>).\u00a0 With their Beatles homages and Parker&#8217;s <strong>Lennonist<\/strong> vocals and sway, it&#8217;s no wonder the British media in particular have been falling all over themselves to heap praise on the band.\u00a0 But Tame Impala has also been at the top of the American college charts and indie-radio playlists (<em><strong>Lonerism<\/strong><\/em> was last week&#8217;s top-played album on <strong>KCRW<\/strong>).\u00a0 So we&#8217;ve been forced to reassess.<\/p>\n<p>And reassess we did when we caught <strong>Tame Impala<\/strong> on <strong>Later with Jools Holland<\/strong> this week.\u00a0 We were completely taken aback (not just back) by their performance of high-and-lonely song, <em><strong>Feels Like We Only Go Backwards<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 You can assess with us below.\u00a0 <em><strong>Feels Like We Only Go Backwards<\/strong><\/em> sounds a bit of <strong>Grizzly Bear\/Flaming Lips<\/strong> run through a <strong>Motown<\/strong> filter, with heartfelt, hurting lyrics and singing.\u00a0 The band also performed <em><strong>Heaven<\/strong><\/em> off the new album (re-mixed thereon by none other than the master, <strong>Todd Rundgren<\/strong>), which to our ears is psych-fuzz circa late &#8217;60s with some modest updates.\u00a0 We prefer the former song, though we acknowledge the spot-on psych-signposts and fuzz-semaphores of the latter song, along with the instrumental acumen and adroit drum-fills thereon.<\/p>\n<p>Check both performances below.\u00a0 We&#8217;re going to pay stricter attention to this band and will report back our decision another day.\u00a0 You do the same, and we&#8217;ll compare notes.\u00a0 I&#8217;d say check them out on their North American tour (see the dates below the videos) that will begin in February, but yet again (WTH?)
