Former Girls<\/strong> singer Christopher Owens<\/strong> yesterday released his critically-acclaimed first solo album Lysandre<\/strong> on Turnstile\/Fat Possum.\u00a0 <\/strong>You can buy\/stream the album HERE<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 We loved San Francisco band Girls<\/strong> (and especially their live show at modest Muddy Waters<\/strong> in December 2008) so the anticipation for Lysandre<\/strong> has been high at Chez Lefort<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The album was evidently written, recorded and sequenced as a depiction of Girls\u2019 first tour in the summer of 2008.\u00a0 Owens<\/strong> has described Lysandre<\/strong> as “a coming of age story, a road trip story, a love story.<\/em>” Written largely in one creative stint and recorded with Girls producer Doug Boehm<\/strong>, Lysandre<\/strong> follows Owens from San Francisco to New York City and on to the French Riviera before a melancholy return home.<\/p>\n

In some ways Lysandre<\/strong> is not a huge departure from Girls (with fuzz guitar, Owens’ sympathetic vocals and compellingly confessional lyrics), but in other ways it is.\u00a0 There’s more of a Brit-pop feel to it (with flutes ferheavensake, as first heard on single Here We<\/strong><\/em> Go<\/strong>).\u00a0 And there’s a far cleaner production overall with (for better or worse) some of the great Girls’ grit scrubbed off.\u00a0 As you’ll hear, there’s more variety on Lysandre than on Girls’ albums.\u00a0 A Broken Heart<\/strong><\/em> sounds like early Rolling Stones<\/strong> balladry, while Riviera Rock<\/strong><\/em> is (to fit the title?) cocktail-loungey, reggae-jazz dub.\u00a0 The album’s title track borders on ’60s bubble-gum pop<\/strong> (with plenty of flute), but is followed by the beautiful heartbreak balladry of Everywhere You Knew<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 The album ends well with\u00a0Part of<\/strong><\/em> Me<\/strong> with its Gentle-On-My-Mind<\/strong><\/em> intro and subsequent gentle-jangle (there’s that flute again).\u00a0 Christopher Owens is on a solo journey that merits your attention.<\/p>\n

Owens<\/strong> and his 7-piece Lysandre<\/strong> band are heading out on tour starting tonight in Chicago, and have just added West Coast dates in March that go on sale this week.\u00a0 Note the unique West Coast venues in the list below.<\/p>\n
