{"id":15929,"date":"2013-03-28T10:21:05","date_gmt":"2013-03-28T18:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=15929"},"modified":"2013-03-28T12:48:51","modified_gmt":"2013-03-28T20:48:51","slug":"foxygen-replaces-entire-european-tour-with-stealthy-show-in-santa-barbara-last-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2013-03\/foxygen-replaces-entire-european-tour-with-stealthy-show-in-santa-barbara-last-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Foxygen Replaces Entire European Tour With Stealthy Show in Santa Barbara Last Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/388532_474974559239147_198317827_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-15932\" alt=\"388532_474974559239147_198317827_n\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/388532_474974559239147_198317827_n-600x600.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/388532_474974559239147_198317827_n-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/388532_474974559239147_198317827_n-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/388532_474974559239147_198317827_n-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/388532_474974559239147_198317827_n.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After wandering in the desert for a bit, we returned home yesterday to a tweet from Westlake Village buzz-band, <strong>Foxygen<\/strong>, announcing that they would play a barely-announced (pop-up?) show at hip new spot, <a href=\"http:\/\/eventsattheloft.com\/\"><strong>The Loft<\/strong><\/a> at <strong>48 Helena Street<\/strong> in Santa Barbara.<strong> \u00a0<\/strong>So we raced down with some of our favorite females for their<strong><\/strong> show last night, which included openers <strong>Pure Bathing Culture <\/strong>(tying the night together was both bands, along with garrulous hosts <strong>Gardens &amp; Villa<\/strong>, having been fortunate enough to have <strong>Richard Swift<\/strong> as their album producer).\u00a0 True to the buzz,\u00a0 <strong>Foxygen<\/strong> came on strong and delivered a raucous, loud and good time for all in attendance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pure Bathing Culture<\/strong> opened the night with a scintillating set of pure-pop gems featuring the gossamer vocals of leader <strong>Sarah Versprule <\/strong>and gifted guitar-play of <strong>Daniel Hindman<\/strong>.\u00a0 While some of their canned percussion (particularly when they&#8217;ve got an actual human on drums) and harmony vocals grated on us (a pet peeve of ours), the sophistication of the songs and their delivery won us over completely.\u00a0 The band is currently recording their debut album with <strong>Richard Swift<\/strong>.\u00a0 Look out for it later this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/601124_10151321165687765_1966672259_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-15938\" alt=\"601124_10151321165687765_1966672259_n\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/601124_10151321165687765_1966672259_n-650x433.jpg\" width=\"635\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/601124_10151321165687765_1966672259_n-650x433.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/601124_10151321165687765_1966672259_n-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/601124_10151321165687765_1966672259_n-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/601124_10151321165687765_1966672259_n.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In contrast to PBC&#8217;s carefully drawn pop songs,<strong> Foxygen<\/strong> came on and let fly.\u00a0 In contrast to the varied and nostalgic <strong>Swiftian<\/strong> production and arrangements on their modestly-aspirational (yeah, right) album, <strong>We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace &amp;<\/strong> <strong>Magic<\/strong>, the band<strong> <\/strong>came out swaggering and swinging, and let their punkier flag fly, leaving the Kinks and other influences largely out of the mix.<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>A somewhat rough (and ludicrously-loud) sound-mix likely contributed to the band&#8217;s fast-and-furious mode, but regardless the local indie-cognoscenti audience ate it up.\u00a0 The band performed most of the songs off of their debut album, letting up only slightly for their nostalgic slow-song <em><strong>San Francisco<\/strong><\/em>. Lead singer <strong>Sam France<\/strong> showed throughout why the band&#8217;s live act (in particular) has been garnering rapturous huzzahs, frequently jumping in place and exhorting the crowd (and himself) to higher heights.\u00a0 Co-founder and guitarist <strong>Jonathan Rado<\/strong> contributed radocal, melodic guitar throughout.\u00a0 Bassist<strong> Justin Nijssen<\/strong>, and keys\/vocalist <strong>Jaclyn Cohen<\/strong> added immensely to the sound, while drummer <strong>Shaun Fleming<\/strong> was a highlight while walloping his kit and contributing sterling back-up vocals back in his corner-din.\u00a0 It was a treat for Santa Barbarans to experience the Foxygen onslaught in a hip, small venue, and we look forward to their next visit.\u00a0 [For a great vignette of Foxygen getting their <strong>Kinks<\/strong> on, check them out unplugged performing their <em><strong>Apeman<\/strong><\/em>-esque <em><strong>In the Darkness<\/strong> <\/em>at bottom.]<\/p>\n<p>We were somewhat taken aback early this morning when the band announced they were cancelling this summer&#8217;s European tour dates.\u00a0 The band explained in their press release:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have some unfortunate news. We have to cancel our upcoming EU dates for May\/June and upcoming EU summer festival dates. We&#8217;d like apologize to all our European fans and supporters. We know this causes frustration and headaches for ticket buyers and promoters alike. We assure you this is ultimately for the creative health of the band. We will back in EU soon and promise to make this up to all of you. Please understand. Thank you again, all of you. Your time, attention and support mean the world to us.
