{"id":17982,"date":"2013-08-13T11:51:20","date_gmt":"2013-08-13T19:51:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=17982"},"modified":"2014-02-28T10:26:06","modified_gmt":"2014-02-28T18:26:06","slug":"the-national-at-the-greek-theater-and-hollywood-forever-cemetery-review-and-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2013-08\/the-national-at-the-greek-theater-and-hollywood-forever-cemetery-review-and-photos\/","title":{"rendered":"The National at The Greek Theater and Hollywood Forever Cemetery&#8211;Review and Photos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/National-Greek-Fish-Lines-Crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-18002\" alt=\"National Greek Fish Lines Crop\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/National-Greek-Fish-Lines-Crop-650x426.jpg\" width=\"635\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/National-Greek-Fish-Lines-Crop-650x426.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/National-Greek-Fish-Lines-Crop-150x98.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/National-Greek-Fish-Lines-Crop-450x295.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a>HP<\/p>\n<p>It was quite a California weekend for <strong>The National<\/strong>.\u00a0 After the band regaled the <strong>Outside Lands<\/strong> crowd on Friday in San Francisco (with the<strong> Kronos Quartet<\/strong> and <strong>Bob Weir<\/strong> invited on stage to assist), <strong>The National<\/strong> made their way down the coast to <strong>LA&#8217;s Greek Theater<\/strong> on Saturday, and then played the best show of the weekend Sunday night at the <strong>Hollywood Forever Cemetery<\/strong>.\u00a0 We weren&#8217;t about to miss &#8217;em and caught both fantastic shows in LA.\u00a0 Ultimately, California got <strong>Nationalized <\/strong>again.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4732.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-18003\" alt=\"IMG_4732\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4732-650x433.jpg\" width=\"635\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4732-650x433.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4732-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4732-450x299.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4732.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a>GL<\/p>\n<p><strong>The National<\/strong> have been on tour since early June in support of their <strong>Best-0f-2013<\/strong> album <em><strong>Trouble Will Find Me<\/strong><\/em> so naturally there were those voicing concern that the band would be a bit stale and going through the motions.\u00a0 Those are the preposterous thoughts of un-believers!\u00a0 Singer <strong>Matt Berninger<\/strong> (with his ubiquitous glass of wine), the <strong>Dessner glimmer twins<\/strong>, and the <strong>Devendorf rhythm brothers<\/strong> (perfectly augmented by horns\/keys\/vocals\/utility players <strong>Ben Lanz<\/strong> and <strong>Kyle Resnick<\/strong>) together co-mingled with and gathered energy from the crowds, ultimately playing each night as if it might be their last.\u00a0 This felt especially the case on Sunday given the grave(yard) environs and the perfect audience.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4821.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-18004\" alt=\"IMG_4821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4821-650x433.jpg\" width=\"635\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4821-650x433.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4821-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4821-450x299.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4821.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a>GL<\/p>\n<p>Having seen the band in concert beginning in 2007, they have never (that we know of) failed to capture the audience with their superb musicianship (it has to be said: <strong>Bryan Devendorf<\/strong> rules the world on drums),<strong> Berninger&#8217;s<\/strong> darkly evocative lyrics and commanding delivery, and the band&#8217;s crowd-cavorting, all of which enables them to connect at a deeper level. What this weekend reminded us is that this <strong>National<\/strong> rapture might first occur on <em><strong>Bloodbuzz Ohio<\/strong><\/em> one night, <em><strong>Squalor Victoria<\/strong> <\/em>another night, or still another night on <em><strong>Humiliation<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 But it <strong>WILL<\/strong> occur.\u00a0 Each audience member will hear a self-deprecating line that resonates deep within or a venomous line that will cause them to scream into the sky.\u00a0 Or all of the above.\u00a0 And in this that person will know they&#8217;re a regular and will be lifted up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Matt-quite-close.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-18005\" alt=\"Matt quite close\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Matt-quite-close-600x600.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Matt-quite-close-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Matt-quite-close-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Matt-quite-close-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Matt-quite-close.jpg 1717w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>HP<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday at the pastoral and placid <strong>Greek Theater<\/strong>, the band strolled into a setlist dominated by songs off the new album (beginning with <em><strong>I Should Live In Salt<\/strong> <\/em>and <em><strong>Don&#8217;t Swallow The Cap<\/strong><\/em>), but also filled out with plenty of older favorites.\u00a0 Given that <em><strong>Trouble Will Find Me<\/strong><\/em> is their &#8220;quietest&#8221; album yet, there was some concern that the band would sleepwalk through the songs.\u00a0 But from the start the band played with an energy and verve that soundly enlivened the new songs.\u00a0 Still it was on the older <em><strong>Bloodbuzz Ohio<\/strong><\/em> that the band first enraptured the older <strong>Greek<\/strong> crowd, and thereafter <strong>The National<\/strong> had them in the palms of their hands.\u00a0 Highlights of the main set at the <strong>Greek<\/strong> included an anger-fueled<em><strong> Squalor Victoria<\/strong><\/em> (with <strong>Berninger&#8217;s<\/strong> first signature knee-buckling) balanced by forlorn horns, <em><strong>I Need My Girl<\/strong><\/em> with <strong>Bryce Dessner&#8217;s<\/strong> adroit headstock-smashing of his (extra) guitar,\u00a0<strong><em>Slipped<\/em> <\/strong>(with its stripped-down, drum-less arrangement),<em><strong> Pink Rabbits<\/strong><\/em> (our favorite song off the new album), and (of course) <em><strong>England<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Fake Empire<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Along the way,<strong> Berninger<\/strong> endeared himself further to the crowd by expressing his absolute love for his new hometown (LA) and how the show was a homecoming for him.\u00a0 Throughout the set we marveled at all of <strong>Berninger&#8217;s<\/strong> old and new<strong> Los Angeles<\/strong> song-references (no matter how disparaging) and how the move might have been foreshadowed thereby.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4800.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-18007\" alt=\"IMG_4800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4800-650x433.jpg\" width=\"635\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4800-650x433.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4800-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4800-450x299.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4800.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a>GL<\/p>\n<p>And then, as with every <strong>National<\/strong> show, it was encore-time and the now-expected quantum leap.\u00a0 <em><strong>Humiliation<\/strong><\/em> was revelatory and proved it is encore-worthy.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong>Next up was the one-two punch of <em><strong>Mr. November<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Terrible Love<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 <strong>Berninger<\/strong> couldn&#8217;t help himself and came out into the crowd not only on<em><strong> Mr. November\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(as he always does), but also on <em><strong>Terrible Love<\/strong><\/em>, each time surrounded by fans screaming along in glee with him.\u00a0 As they have done each night on the tour, the band closed with an acoustic, sans-microphone sing-a-long of <em><strong>Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a perfect way to end their show (though at the <strong>Greek<\/strong> a good part of the crowd seemed not to know the lyrics or to be able\/willing to sing along&#8211;that issue would be soundly rectified the next night).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MattHornsHundertCrop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-18039\" alt=\"MattHornsHundertCrop\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MattHornsHundertCrop-650x490.jpg\" width=\"635\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MattHornsHundertCrop-650x490.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MattHornsHundertCrop-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MattHornsHundertCrop-450x339.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a>HP<\/p>\n<p>Sunday&#8217;s <strong>Hollywood Forever Cemetery<\/strong> setting and audience stood in stark contrast to Saturday night&#8217;s.\u00a0 Gone were the plastic seats, order and somewhat-sedate crowd.\u00a0 In were the blankets, picnics, a more ardent, grassroots crowd, and (surprisingly) a far superior sound mix.\u00a0 Though the setlist wasn&#8217;t much different from the night before, the comfortable (not comforting) surroundings and engaged crowd made the night particularly special.\u00a0 You could sense the band being swept up in the <strong>HFC<\/strong> sense-surround.\u00a0 It could not have hurt that the <strong>Dessners&#8217; mother<\/strong> was in attendance.\u00a0 And so<strong> The National<\/strong> were particularly on their game this night, vacillating comfortably between bathos and banter (&#8220;It&#8217;s a pretty dead crowd out there,&#8221; Berninger remarked as he gazed out over the tombstones, before breaking out the penis and zipper commentary) and pathos (the much-loved relationship song <em><strong>About Today<\/strong><\/em><strong> <\/strong>hit deep).\u00a0 In between were sweet songs for his wife (<em><strong>I Need My Girl<\/strong>)<\/em>, less-than-sweet songs for his wife (<em><strong>Conversation 16<\/strong><\/em> with its &#8220;I was afraid I&#8217;d eat your brains&#8221;), <em><strong>Anyone&#8217;s Ghost<\/strong><\/em><strong>,<\/strong><em><strong> This is the Last Time<\/strong><\/em><strong>,<\/strong> and stalwarts <em><strong>Mistaken For Strangers<\/strong> <\/em>(also the title of a <a href=\"http:\/\/mistakenforstrangersmovie.com\/\">not-to-be-missed new documentary by <strong>Berninger&#8217;s<\/strong> brother <strong>Tom<\/strong><\/a>), <em><strong>All The Wine<\/strong><\/em><strong> <\/strong>(we had not heard since 2007), <em><strong>Abel<\/strong><\/em> (which was redeemed after a somewhat perfunctory performance the night before) and signature song <em><strong>Slow Show<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 And then it was on to the superb encore. When <strong>Berninger<\/strong> came out into the crowd on <em><strong>Mr. November<\/strong> <\/em>at the<strong> Cemetery <\/strong>there was no hesitation as the crowd rushed to rally around the singer.\u00a0 For a brief moment it was like being back with <strong>The Clash<\/strong> in <strong>1979<\/strong> at the <strong>Santa Monica Civic<\/strong>.\u00a0 After a tremendous, crowd-raging <em><strong>Terrible Love<\/strong><\/em>, the boys (backed by fine openers <strong>Daughter<\/strong>) sent the audience off\u00a0 into the night again with <em><strong>Vanderlyle<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 But this time the crowd knew every word of the song and sang along with gleeful abandon.\u00a0 And all was again right with the world.<\/p>\n<p>See the
