Alton <\/strong>and Hortense Ellis<\/strong> grew up in a musical family in Kingston<\/strong>, Jamaica, and Alton<\/strong> began his rise to prominence at the foundational Studio One <\/strong>recording studio of Coxsone Dodd<\/strong>.\u00a0 But what many don’t recall about Alton<\/strong> is that the “Godfather of Rocksteady”<\/strong> began his career (along with his sister, Hortense<\/strong>) mining the rhythm & blues<\/strong> vein.\u00a0 We were reminded of this recently when we again ran across the stunningly good Cry Together<\/strong><\/em> on which Alton<\/strong> steps aside and lets his sister, Hortense,<\/strong> get sensationally tense.\u00a0 Check Cry Together<\/strong><\/em> out below first (just listen to that chorus, would ya?!) followed by some more crying in their seminal Breakfast in Bed<\/strong><\/em>, followed at bottom by Alton’s<\/strong> hit (with The Flames<\/strong>), Cry Tough<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Jamaica had soul.<\/p>\n
