Without knowing more, we surmised the 16-year old<strong> Lorde<\/strong> would be yet another young, juvenile artist left to be exposed and plundered by the critics.\u00a0 Well we surmised wrong.\u00a0 <strong>Lorde<\/strong> and her new album <em><strong>Pure Heroine<\/strong><\/em> have received near-universal praise from critics (including one of our favorites, the highly-respected and exacting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2013\/sep\/22\/lorde-madame-jojos-london-review\"><strong>Kitty Empire<\/strong><\/a> of the <strong>Guardian<\/strong>), with the album receiving an admirable <strong>78 score<\/strong> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/music\/pure-heroine\/lorde\/critic-reviews\"><strong>Metacritic<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 And of those that haven&#8217;t fallen in line, they are mostly dismissible (the oft-ridiculous<strong> Spin<\/strong> amongst them).<\/p>\n<p>Having heard a few more<em><strong> Lorde<\/strong><\/em> songs, we are generally impressed (<em><strong>Tennis Court<\/strong><\/em> is another gem).\u00a0 We like the spare production (not unlike <strong>The xx<\/strong>), melodies, vocals and (surprisingly) lyrics.\u00a0 As to the lyrics, the positive influence of her poet mother,<strong> Sonja Yelich<\/strong>, is clear.\u00a0 Thought and care has been taken in crafting the lyrics, which hold up reasonably well to closer scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday night <strong>Lorde<\/strong> made her national TV debut on the<em><strong> Jimmy Fallon Show<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 We think she acquitted herself quite well (despite the <strong>Milli-Vanilli<\/strong> virtual-choir accompaniment&#8211;she should have borrowed <strong>Moby&#8217;s gang<\/strong>).\u00a0 Watch below as <strong>Lorde<\/strong> performed <strong><em>Royals<\/em><\/strong> and then <em><strong>White Teeth<\/strong><strong> Teens<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 What say you?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nbc.com\/assets\/video\/widget\/widget.html?vid=n41420\" height=\"425\" width=\"625\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nbc.com\/assets\/video\/widget\/widget.html?vid=n41419\" height=\"425\" width=\"625\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A teenager introduced us awhile back to the ubiquitous song Royals by the New Zealand teenager known as Lorde (Ella Yelich-O&#8217;Connor her given name).\u00a0 From the get-go, it was hard to deny the charm of Royals, with its spare, but beautiful, melody and provocative (in a decent way) lyrics.
