We would have given our left ventricle to have been in NYC on Tuesday at WFUV Radio\u2019s Holiday Cheer concert <\/strong>at NYC\u2019s Beacon Theatre<\/a>.\u00a0 At WFUV, Sam Beam (Iron & Wine)<\/strong> hosted the festivities while the likes of Glen Hansard (Once<\/em>, Frames)<\/strong>, Kathleen Edwards, St. Nick Lowe<\/strong>, and Beth Orton<\/strong> performed, all as bountifully backed by Calexico<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Recently the combo of Sam Beam, Glen Hansard, Kathleen Edwards, and Calexico delivered a rapturous cover of Fairytale of New York<\/strong><\/em>, the Pogues’<\/strong> and Kirsty MacColl’s<\/strong> Christmas classic on Fallon.\u00a0 Watch below as the voices of Beam, Edwards<\/strong> and Hansard<\/strong> combine perfectly on the song, lifted into the air by Calexico’s<\/strong> magical accompaniment.\u00a0 Evidently, at WFUV<\/strong> Sam Beam<\/strong> described the song as “one that he envisioned Santa Claus<\/strong> writing to Mrs. Claus.”<\/strong> \u00a0 Uh-huh.\u00a0 Possibly.<\/p>\n

The last time we heard the song performed live was approximately 25 years ago when Joe Strummer<\/strong> was leading the Shane MacGowan<\/strong>-less Pogues<\/strong> in San Francisco in a raucous, rousing rendition.\u00a0 While that night was unforgettable, we’ll take Beam<\/strong> and Hansard<\/strong> combining with the ever-comely and gifted Edwards<\/strong> on this particular song any day of the week (Edwards<\/strong> plays the role of Kirsty MacColl<\/strong> much better than the lovely Strummer<\/strong>).\u00a0 If ever a group of talented artists should combine into a super-group, it is Beam, Edwards <\/strong>and Hansard<\/strong>.\u00a0 We hope we see and hear them together much more often in the future.\u00a0 Watch on Fallon below.
