Live on Letterman<\/strong><\/em>–the gift that keeps on giving.\u00a0 Just in time for holiday giving, the folks at Letterman<\/strong> outdid themselves this week in securing the great Glen Hansard<\/strong> and his huge band for an 80-minute performance for their Live on Letterman<\/strong><\/em> <\/strong>series. We have been agog over Hansard’s<\/strong> live sets ever since catching him (embarrassingly, for the first time) and a large band in 2012 at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival<\/strong><\/a>. To see what we saw and what you should catch the next time you have the opportunity, watch this outstanding performance below.\u00a0 What we’ve learned is that Hansard<\/strong> gives everything he’s got every single time he performs; if you don’t believe us, watch as he exhorts and tears up (in the 24th minute) during the heart-rending Bird of Sorrow<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Along the way, watch Hansard<\/strong> wax about the Beatles<\/strong>, question the use of the phrase “Happy Holidays,”<\/strong> and perform songs from his last album Rhythm and Repose<\/strong><\/em>, and brand new EP Drive All Night<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 During the set Hansard<\/strong> and his great, huge band perform Love Don’t Leave Me Waiting<\/strong><\/em>, the new Lonely Deserter<\/strong><\/em>, When Your Mind’s Made Up<\/strong><\/em> (from the movie\/Broadway show Once<\/strong><\/em>), Bird Of Sorrow, Low Rising<\/strong><\/em>, another new song Her Mercy, Song Of Good Hope, Drive All Night<\/strong><\/em>, and, finally, Hansard’s<\/strong> popular hit Falling Slowly<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n
