2013<\/strong> was a fantastic year for Sam Beam’s Iron & Wine<\/strong>.\u00a0 Their garrulous Ghost on Ghost<\/strong> <\/em>album appeared all over the Best Albums of 2013<\/strong> lists (including ours–soon come), and they wowed people around the globe (including us at the First Unitarian Church in LA<\/strong><\/a>) on tour with their rapturous big-band sound.<\/p>\n

Adding to all of that is our favorite New Year’s Eve song of the year<\/strong>, Desert Babbler<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 The song\u2019s lyrics are obviously apt: \u201cIt’s New Year’s Eve, and California\u2019s gonna kill you soon\u2026Black houses in the hills and roadside hearts.\u201d\u00a0 We love the gestalt in which a homesick, guilty-sounding Beam<\/strong> sings about himself: \u201cYou left to look for heaven, but you\u2019re far from that hard light tonight.\u201d\u00a0 Listen to the big band perform the song below.\u00a0 The song’s lyrics follow.<\/p>\n
