In his various, much-loved incarnations (Shins, Broken Bells, <\/strong>etc.) James Mercer <\/strong>has often hid the emotional ball.\u00a0 In short his lyrics have done their best to obfuscate the heart in the matter.\u00a0 But no matter the lyrical artifice, his vocals have frequently laid bare the ghost.\u00a0 As Mercer’s<\/strong> musical life has evolved, the two (lyric and emotion) have coalesced more often.\u00a0 The perfect example came today when La Blogotheque<\/strong> featured Broken Bells<\/strong><\/a> (Danger Mouse<\/strong> and Mercer<\/strong>) together on the band’s new song The Change of Lights<\/strong><\/em> off of their imminent album After The Disco<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Listen as Mercer<\/strong> lays it all out both lyrically and, especially, vocally.\u00a0 That’s what we like to see–right there.\u00a0 Afterwards, watch the duo perform October<\/strong><\/em> off of their eponymous 2010 debut.\u00a0 And with that, Broken Bells<\/strong><\/em> have offered something both broken and worthy of healing.\u00a0 We can’t wait for After The Disco<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n
