As alerted previously<\/a>, Conor Oberst<\/strong><\/a> yesterday released his new solo album Upside Down Mountain,<\/strong><\/em> his first major label release (on Nonesuch<\/strong>)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>The new album is a tour de force and possibly his best.\u00a0 It’s receiving near-universal reviews (ours, soon come).\u00a0 Yep, there will always be Oberst haters, but the album strikes us as his most cogent, heartfelt and open in quite some time.\u00a0 The New York Times’ <\/strong>esteemed Jon Pareles<\/strong> has observed: “All of Mr. Oberst\u2019s<\/strong> gifts align on Upside Down Mountain<\/strong><\/em>.”\u00a0 We couldn’t agree more.<\/p>\n

To kick off the album’s late night campaign, Oberst<\/strong> appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/strong> last night, backed by the dynamic Dawes<\/strong> (who will back Oberst<\/strong> on his impending tour–check the dates at bottom).\u00a0 Check out below their performance of great track Zigzagging Toward the Light<\/strong><\/em>, off the just-released album.\u00a0 Oberst<\/strong> has always been backed by great ensembles (Bright Eyes<\/strong>, the Mystic Valley Band<\/strong>, The Felice Brothers, <\/strong>etc.), but we predict that Dawes\u00a0<\/strong>will be the pick of the litter.\u00a0 You can see\/hear it below in Dawes’<\/strong> background vocals and Taylor Goldsmith’s<\/strong> electrifying guitar playing at song’s end.<\/p>\n
