We’d been hearing repeated raves from reliable sources about the alt-country band Shakey Graves<\/strong>, but were gravely shaken\u00a0not to immediately connect with them upon\u00a0listening. \u00a0Over time, however, a few of their songs finally sank in to our ears. \u00a0What we came to realize, though, was that it was their songs that included collaborator Esm\u00e9 Patterson<\/strong> <\/a>that were really making their mark on us.\u00a0 Her strong vocals and harmonies featured on\u00a0<\/strong>songs\/performances such as the ensemble’s Big Time Nashville Star<\/strong> <\/em>and Dearly Departed<\/strong><\/em> (which you can watch\/listen to way below) drew us in more than the comparatively straight-forward deliveries by the core band to which she had been added.<\/p>\n

The more we delved into Ms. Patterson <\/strong>(formerly of Paperbird<\/strong>), the better we grasped the reasons for her allure. \u00a0She’s a whip-smart singer-songwriter who can write, sing and play in all fields, at times sounding like Neko Case<\/strong> and at others like Joni Mitchell.<\/strong>\u00a0 Last week Patterson<\/strong> impressed further\u00a0when she released the official video for The Glow<\/strong> (<\/em>off\u00a0her critically-acclaimed recent album Woman To Woman<\/strong><\/em>). \u00a0In so doing she has added acting to her considerable list of skills.\u00a0 Watch below as Patterson<\/strong> gives a convincing, nuanced performance on screen of the song, which tells Caroline No’s<\/strong><\/em> story from Caroline’s<\/strong> perspective (all the songs off the new album tell the woman’s side of the story found in\u00a0famous songs by The Beatles, Leadbelly<\/strong>, The Band<\/strong> and Townes Van Zandt<\/strong> in addition to the Beach Boys<\/strong>). \u00a0Check the video out below, and then\u00a0check out the lyrics to Caroline No<\/strong><\/em> to connect “the glow.”<\/p>\n
