In 2014 novelist\/songwriter Willy Vlautin<\/strong> (of Richmond Fontaine<\/strong>, one of our faves) determined a different direction and delineated The Delines<\/strong><\/a> for which he wrote a new album’s worth of songs.\u00a0 That album would be released as Colfax, <\/strong><\/em>which would turn out one of our favorites of the year.\u00a0 The band features singer Amy Boone (Damnations), Vlautin, Sean Oldham (Richmond Fontaine), Jenny Conlee (Decemberists), Tucker Jackson<\/strong> and Freddy Trujillo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The idea for The Delines<\/strong> evidently occurred while out on a Richmond Fontaine<\/strong> tour on which Boone<\/strong> was backing up the band on a couple of songs.\u00a0 During the tour Boone<\/strong> would sing soul songs to warm up.\u00a0 Some of Boone’s soul-singing made on impression on Vlautin<\/strong> who later penned several songs he hoped Boone<\/strong> would sing.\u00a0 Vlautin<\/strong> then demoed those songs at producer John Askew’s<\/strong> (Dodos, Neko Case<\/strong>) studio and shared them with Boone<\/strong>.\u00a0 Long story short:\u00a0 Boone<\/strong> liked the songs, the band was culled, and the resulting recorded parts were mixed expertly by Askew<\/strong> into what would become the affecting album Colfax<\/strong><\/em>, which was released on Decor<\/strong> and El Cortez Records<\/strong>.

We love Vlautin’s<\/strong> short-story tellings in the songs, and The Delines’<\/strong> country-soul musical mien fits the songs perfectly, with Boone’s<\/strong> honest vocals telling the deceptively simple tales so well.\u00a0 Colfax<\/strong><\/em> is a fantastic listen from stem to stern.\u00a0 To get a feel, first check out below four songs performed by the band for KEXP<\/strong>.\u00a0 Though set in the Gulf, The Oil Rigs at Night<\/strong><\/em> strikes home in particular given our rigs offshore in the Santa Barbara Channel.<\/p>\n
