Thinking back to other such moments,<strong> Elliott Smith&#8217;s<\/strong> highly-unlikely, but luminous, 1998 nomination and performance of his song <em><strong>Miss Misery<\/strong><\/em> during the ceremony definitely qualifies.\u00a0 Check it out at bottom.<\/p>\n<p>The confluence of the <strong>Awards<\/strong> ceremony and later listening to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andyshauf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Andy Schauf&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> new album, <em><strong>The Bearer of Bad News <\/strong><\/em>(on Portland&#8217;s arts-consortium\/label<strong> Tender Loving Empire<\/strong>), couldn&#8217;t help but lead us back into the vaults to look for <strong>Smith&#8217;s<\/strong> Oscar moment.\u00a0 One immediately harkens back to <strong>Smith<\/strong> when listening to Saskatchewan&#8217;s <strong>Schauf<\/strong>, but especially on the well-crafted song <em><strong>You&#8217;re Out Wasting<\/strong><\/em> off the new album.\u00a0 <strong>Schauf&#8217;s<\/strong> vocals, lyrics and production all pay proper homage to <strong>Smith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the similarities, <strong>Schauf&#8217;s<\/strong> songs are so well-done and ardently delivered that we can&#8217;t help but be drawn in.\u00a0 Check out <em><strong>You&#8217;re Out Wasting<\/strong><\/em> below, followed by the official video for another fine track off the album, <em><strong>I&#8217;m Not Falling Asleep<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 <strong>Schauf&#8217;s<\/strong> album was written over four years and recorded in his parent\u2019s basement (on a hill?), and <strong>Shauf<\/strong> played nearly every instrument thereon.\u00a0 If you like what you hear (and we do indeed), go <a href=\"https:\/\/tenderlovingempire.com\/andy-shauf-the-bearer-of-bad-news-pre-order\/?utm_content=buffer5d4cb&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a> and buy the vinyl\/digital versions of <em><strong>The Bearer of Bad News<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 <strong>Schauf<\/strong> is out on tour and will play <strong>LA&#8217;s Bardot<\/strong> on <strong>March 30th<\/strong> before flitting off to Europe.\u00a0 Catch him if you can.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/J0BBysLRAng\" width=\"625\" height=\"425\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GeQU4cMaKoY\" width=\"625\" height=\"425\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IfIZsG6jgtw\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While we watched the Academy Awards last night, we couldn&#8217;t help longing for one of those rare moments when musical magic happens at the Oscars.\u00a0 Common and John Legend&#8217;s righteous performance of Glory (from Selma) was one such moment (followed by their eloquent and appropriate acceptance speeches).
