If there are better interpreters of Elliott Smith’s<\/strong> perfect songs than Jessica Lea Mayfield<\/strong> <\/a>and co-hort Seth Avett<\/strong>, we have not heard them.\u00a0 Mayfield<\/strong> and Avett<\/strong> have just released a fantastic album homage to Elliott<\/strong> entitled Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield Sing Elliott Smith<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/strong>We are huge fans of Mayfield<\/strong><\/a>, and her world-weary vocals match well the Elliott<\/strong> gestalt and gate.\u00a0 And the duo’s harmonies are simply luminous (see Baby Britain<\/strong><\/em> below).<\/p>\n

To get a feel for the fealty and fettle of these fine artists, check out the performances below of Smith’s Between The Bars,<\/em><\/strong> Fond Farewell, Baby Britain <\/strong><\/em>and Pitseleh<\/strong><\/em> on KEXP <\/strong>(which deserves kudos for recently reversing its policy of delaying–for months–their video releases, which had rendered the videos mostly moot).\u00a0 Between The Bars<\/strong><\/em> is particularly worthy.<\/p>\n

Oh how we miss Elliott<\/strong>.\u00a0 It’s a long way from that spellbinding night at the Yucatan<\/strong> circa 1998 and now, and we regret deeply that he’s not here to keep venting life’s spleen and bending its spine.\u00a0 Thankfully we have Mayfield<\/strong> and Avett<\/strong> to help recover and assuage the loss.\u00a0 Check ’em out below.<\/p>\n
