For those that’ve seen or heard Conor Oberst<\/strong> spit lyrics with vehement venom, today was a dream day.\u00a0 Whether on his own or as a part of Bright Eyes<\/strong>, Oberst<\/strong> has always slathered the stage in estimable slicks. With some artists, it might seem only a surface show.\u00a0 But with Oberst<\/strong> it has always felt real and oh so right, harkening back to the gifted gobbing of yore.<\/p>\n

Getting back to today, Oberst<\/strong> and his other desperate Desaparecidos<\/strong><\/a> have released a phenomenal new song, City On The Hill<\/strong><\/em>, and announced they are at long last releasing a new album, Payola<\/strong><\/em>, their first in thirteen (13!) years. Longtime Oberst<\/strong> collaborator Mike Mogis<\/strong> produced.<\/p>\n

Oh how we love this song.\u00a0 Check it out below.\u00a0 While others have inexplicably ascribed certain influences (Rolling Stone<\/strong> says <\/a>Tommy Tutone<\/a>. <\/strong>Huh?\u00a0 Conor,<\/strong> you really need to stop granting those idiots interviews–really? the 867-5309<\/strong><\/em> band??), we give you just one:\u00a0 Husker Du<\/strong>.\u00a0 Husker Du<\/strong> and the other Twin City bands laid the foundation and Oberst<\/strong> and crew desperately build on top of it with City On The Hill<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 We can’t stop it from repeating.\u00a0 Please don’t make it stop.<\/p>\n

“We could sing together in America”! Let’s do! “We’ll all get rich in America!!!!”\u00a0 Please, do define rich.<\/p>\n

Many have forgotten the depth of artistry on Oberst’s Saddle Creek Records<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 Desaparecidos<\/strong><\/a> are one of many great, semi-unheralded artists on the label that includes Cursive<\/strong><\/a>, The Faint<\/strong><\/a>, The Good Life <\/a><\/strong>(!!), Now It’s Overhead<\/strong><\/a> and Son Ambulance<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Go there now.<\/p>\n
