Sadly, the David Letterman<\/strong> days are ticking down to the inevitable culmination of the talk show host’s esteemed and historic career.\u00a0 We’ve been enjoying Letterman<\/strong> since 1982 when he and talented band-leader Paul Shaffer<\/strong> would jokingly recall the illusory days when the show began “15 years ago.”\u00a0 33 years later, Letterman<\/strong> and Shaffer<\/strong> will end their talk show collaboration, and the baton will be passed by a “class act” (as Dave likes to say).\u00a0 Sad, but inevitable.\u00a0 Many of late night’s best musical moments (Warren Zevon<\/strong><\/a>, Tom Waits<\/a><\/strong>, James Brown (killing it in 1982)<\/strong><\/a>, R.E.M., U2<\/strong>, Joe Strummer<\/strong><\/a>, Janelle Monae<\/strong><\/a>, etc., etc., etc., but NOT that uber-lame Future Islands<\/strong> performance) have occurred on the Letterman Show<\/strong>, and while we fear the void, we trust that Stephen Colbert<\/strong> will carry on that tradition when the show re-starts on September 8th<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As the nights dwindle down, Letterman<\/strong> is bringing out some of the musical greats, to be capped off by Tom Waits<\/strong> as the last musical guest<\/strong> on the show on Wednesday, May 20th<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Last night was another great musical event.\u00a0 As mentioned yesterday, Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam<\/strong> and Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell<\/strong> showed up to cover Unicorn’s No Way Out Of Here<\/em><\/strong> (but see “Exit” sign above) from their forthcoming covers album Sing Into My Mouth <\/strong><\/em>(which you can pre-order HERE<\/strong><\/a>).\u00a0 With Shaffer<\/strong> and the great studio band riffing along, Bridwell<\/strong> and Beam<\/strong> lit up the stage with their harmonies and exchanges.\u00a0 Check it out below.<\/p>\n
