Lowell.<\/em>\u00a0 <\/strong>Adding to the album, <strong>Stevens <\/strong>deftly drove this point home last week in LA with consecutive astonishingly-good and heart-stirring performances at the <strong>Dorothy Chandler Pavilion<\/strong>.\u00a0 It had been nearly three years since <strong>Stevens<\/strong> last traipsed through these parts (for his <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2012-12\/review-photos-and-video-sufjan-stevens-at-henry-fonda-theater-in-la\/\" target=\"_blank\">wondrous &#8220;Wheel of Christmas&#8221; holiday-party at the Fonda<\/a><\/strong>) and five years since his <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-10\/the-adz-are-against-that-ole-banjo-sufjan-stevens-at-the-paramount-theatre\/\" target=\"_blank\">Age of Adz tour de force<\/a><\/strong>, and so we were determined to catch both nights of his local stand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSXes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-24017\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSXes-650x436.jpg\" alt=\"SSXes\" width=\"635\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSXes-650x436.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSXes-150x101.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSXes-450x302.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSXes.jpg 1521w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though his live shows bear the weight of the new album and its devastating themes, the performances are also musically magnificent and dynamic, varying from delicate <strong>Simon &amp; Garfunkel\/Nick Drake<\/strong> sounds to the massive, end-times bombast of <em><strong>Blue Bucket of Gold<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 During the first half of the shows, <strong>Stevens<\/strong> killed us softly by performing nearly the entirety of the crestfallen-yet-cathartic <em><strong>Carrie &amp; Lowell<\/strong><\/em> (though re-sequenced for his tour).\u00a0 Though the album&#8217;s songs are generally quiet affairs (lending a feeling of intimacy at the <strong>Pavilion<\/strong> despite the grand surroundings), the pin-drop crowds were kept on the edge their seats by Stevens&#8217; evocative vocals, deft playing and additive arrangements, coupled with the gifted support of multi-instrumentalists <strong>Ben Lanz, Casey Foubert, Dawn Landes<\/strong>, and<strong> James McAlister<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSOceanBest.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-24018\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSOceanBest-650x399.jpg\" alt=\"SSOceanBest\" width=\"635\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSOceanBest-650x399.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSOceanBest-150x92.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSOceanBest-450x277.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSOceanBest.jpg 1660w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the instrumental prelude of<em><strong> Redford (For Yia-Yia &amp; Pappou)<\/strong><\/em>, Stevens opened on <em><strong>Death By Dignity<\/strong><\/em> by singing, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know where to begin&#8221; and &#8220;I&#8217;ve got nothing to prove.&#8221; Despite these concerns he managed to begin anew magnificently and proved both nights that he is a musical heavyweight despite the ostensibly miniature frames of many of his songs.\u00a0 Stevens went on thereafter to perform nearly the entirety of <em><strong>Carrie &amp; Lowell<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 <em><strong>Should Have Known Better<\/strong><\/em> is one of the standouts of the new album and was one of the highlights of the evening (see for yourself below in the fan video).\u00a0 Other highlights included the superb<strong> Paul Simon-ish <em>Eugene<\/em><\/strong>, <em><strong>John My Beloved<\/strong><\/em> (with Stevens&#8217; otherworldly vocals and <strong>Dawn Landes&#8217;<\/strong> harmonies), the desolation and beauty of <em><strong>The Only Thing<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>with its musical &#8220;sounds and wonders,&#8221; the frankness (&#8220;we&#8217;re all going to die&#8221;) of <em><strong>Fourth of July<\/strong><\/em>, and the album&#8217;s eponymous homage.\u00a0 Throughout the first half, <strong>Stevens&#8217;<\/strong> home movies of Carrie and others were projected onto church-like window-screens behind the stage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSBanjo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-24019\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSBanjo-650x408.jpg\" alt=\"SSBanjo\" width=\"635\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSBanjo-650x408.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSBanjo-150x94.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSBanjo-450x282.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSBanjo.jpg 1215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a transition to the second half of the shows, Stevens treated the audience to a moving\/entertaining monologue each night, and a mesmerizing mix of older songs.\u00a0 <strong>On Wednesday Stevens explained his parents indifference to death<\/strong>:\u00a0 &#8220;I blame my parents for everything.\u00a0 My obsession with mortality comes from them.\u00a0 They were unflinching on the topic of death.\u00a0 I remember one time we were driving in a blizzard and my father lost control on ice, and I looked up in the passenger seat and saw my step-mother grab a ginger ale, drink it and say &#8216;kiss it goodbye kids.&#8217;\u00a0 As the centrifugal force force gathered in me my entire life.&#8221;\u00a0 He then told a story about his father having him put his pet albino rat (&#8220;Mr. Bossy Pants&#8221;) out of its misery.\u00a0 After the deed was done, Stevens&#8217; father said &#8216;Mr. Bossy Pants just went to meet his maker.'&#8221;\u00a0 And Stevens led into the next song by saying &#8220;&#8216;Cause we&#8217;re all headed there someday.&#8221;\u00a0 <strong>On Thursday Stevens discussed<\/strong> how we are all given great encouragement throughout our lives until we graduate from college and are essentially left alone to weather the harsh realities of life.\u00a0 He closed by calling for the crowd to commit anew to encouraging others in these times.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSDawneHalo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-24020\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSDawneHalo-650x394.jpg\" alt=\"SSDawneHalo\" width=\"635\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSDawneHalo-650x394.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSDawneHalo-150x91.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSDawneHalo-450x273.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSDawneHalo.jpg 1445w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The shows&#8217; second half songs included the delicate, given-new-meaning <em><strong>The Owl &amp; The Tanager<\/strong><\/em>, three consecutive songs (on Wednesday) from <em><strong>Seven Swans<\/strong><\/em> (the first banjo moment on the building <em><strong>In The Devil&#8217;s Territory, The Dress Looks Nice on You, <\/strong><\/em>and superb solo highlight <em><strong>To Be Alone With You<\/strong><\/em>), and <strong>Age of Adz&#8217;s <em>Futile Devices<\/em><\/strong>.<strong><em> \u00a0<\/em><\/strong>And then on Wednesday it was time for one of the greatest songs ever written, the heart-rending <em><strong>Casimir Pulaski Day<\/strong><\/em> (RIP Matt and Claire).\u00a0<strong> Stevens<\/strong> then closed his main set each night with album-closer <em><strong>Blue Bucket of Gold<\/strong><\/em> and its release of<strong> Carrie<\/strong> to Revelations-worthy bombast and light.\u00a0 About this song and its high-decibel backdrop, Stevens has said:\u00a0 &#8220;I didn\u2019t know (my mom) well in a lot of ways and I didn\u2019t know how to say goodbye on the last track with articulation. So I quit playing piano and vocals and just stopped. I wanted to surrender her to the beyond with noises that sound bigger than just me.&#8221;\u00a0 Mission accomplished, as they say.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSBanjoEnsemble.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-24021\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSBanjoEnsemble-650x317.jpg\" alt=\"SSBanjoEnsemble\" width=\"635\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSBanjoEnsemble-650x317.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSBanjoEnsemble-150x73.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSBanjoEnsemble-450x219.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSBanjoEnsemble.jpg 1824w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He closed each night with crowd-favorites from the much-loved <em><strong>Illinois<\/strong><\/em> album, including <em><strong>Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois; The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us!<\/strong><\/em>; and <em><strong>Chicago<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Differences between the two nights?\u00a0 The crowd was supremely reverential on Wednesday with no humming or singing along, which reduced distraction and heightened the focus and intensity of the performance.\u00a0 And Wednesday was our preferred setlist.\u00a0 On Thursday the sound and vocal effects had been completely dialed-in and the volume levels had been seemingly doubled as the revelatory bombast at times pounded the Pavilion.\u00a0 And we were treated to <em><strong>For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti <\/strong><\/em>(watch below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSCasio.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-24022\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSCasio-650x484.jpg\" alt=\"SSCasio\" width=\"635\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSCasio-650x484.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSCasio-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSCasio-450x335.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SSCasio.jpg 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stevens<\/strong> never fails to impress live, and these consecutive two-hour shows in Los Angeles confirmed he is one of our most gifted songwriters, composers and performers.\u00a0Stevens received confirmatory standing-ovations each night from all five levels of the Pavilion.
