The half-Congolese, half-Angolan, Cape Town-residing Yannick Ilunga, <\/strong>aka “Petite Noir” <\/strong>will release new album La Vie Est Belle \/ Life Is Beautiful<\/em><\/strong> on 9\/11 on Domino<\/strong>. The album was recorded at Box Ten Studios in London with Oli Bayston <\/strong>(Boxed In) and Leon Brichard <\/strong>(Ibibio).\u00a0 A press release advises that the album is “named after a revered Congolese film of the same name…[and r]epresents the first full expression of what Ilunga<\/strong> calls \u2018Noirwave<\/strong>\u2019, which is more of a concept than a specific sound. Inspired by innovators like Mos Def<\/strong> and legends Fela Kuti<\/strong> and Tabu Ley<\/strong>, Noirwave encompasses a \u2018new African aesthetic\u2019, plain and simple. \u2018I think for me, it’s just the story their music tells and the sense of freedom.
