When Stephen Colbert<\/strong> closed out the Colbert Report<\/strong> he did it in style with an incendiary musical performance by King Kendrick (Lamar)<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0After a feelgood cover of Sly Stone’s Everyday People<\/em><\/strong> by a large entourage on Monday’s opening night of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert<\/strong>, Colbert<\/strong>\u00a0got down to serious musical work by having Lamar<\/strong> as his first proper musical guest. \u00a0And Kendrick<\/strong> delivered the goods with a tour-de-force performance of a mind-blowing medley of tracks off\u00a0To Pimp a Butterfly<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0The medley consisted of Wesley\u2019s Theory, Momma, King Kunta, <\/strong><\/em>and U<\/strong><\/em>, the latter featuring an added verse.<\/p>\n

Check it out below. \u00a0Kendrick<\/strong> was once again backed by a full band that included the talented\u00a0Thundercat<\/strong> and Bilal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With these two Colbert<\/strong> performances, Lamar has locked up 2015’s\u00a0Best Musical Performance on TV\u00a0<\/strong>award. \u00a0Game over. \u00a0As Colbert said:\u00a0“That was beautiful.”<\/p>\n

Two days in,\u00a0Colbert<\/strong> hasn’t missed a musical beat. \u00a0But we’ll just see about the rest of the week (how you can follow Kendrick Lamar<\/strong> with a “country” star and a Paul Simon cover band<\/strong>, we can’t imagine). \u00a0But hey, Colbert’s the one with the Big IQ so….<\/p>\n
