Two of our all-time time favorites, Dave Rawlings <\/strong>and Gillian Welch<\/strong>\u00a0are back in a big way today, this time in the guise of the Dave Rawlings Machine<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0via their Nashville Obsolete<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0album released today. \u00a0For the uninitiated, Rawlings<\/strong> and Welch<\/strong> have been putting out soul-rending music together (primarily under the “Gillian Welch”<\/strong> moniker) since 1996. \u00a0But a couple years ago, they leaned to the Rawlings<\/strong> side of the equation and released a well-received album under the Dave Rawlings Machine<\/strong> brand. \u00a0They’ve now returned with second album Nashville Obsolete<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0aided and abetted by\u00a0Willie Watson<\/strong>\u00a0on guitar\/vocals and\u00a0Paul Kowert<\/strong>\u00a0on bass, with appearances by Brittany Haas<\/strong> on fiddle and Jordan Tice<\/strong> on mandolin.<\/p>\n

With the newly-added strings (to go with Rawlings’ usual guitar brilliance), the song feels a bit like Neil Young<\/strong>\u00a0circa-Harvest<\/strong><\/em> (with Jack Nitzsche<\/strong> at the production helm, but minus some bombast). \u00a0And that’s a high compliment in our book.<\/p>\n

About Nashville Obsolete\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Welch<\/strong> told the Wall Street Journal: \u00a0\u201cIn addition to the kind of 1930s\/Depression\/Dust Bowl thing we\u2019ve always had going on, there\u2019s a pretty strong 1970s thing going on, too. \u00a0We would be the first to admit [the first DRM album, A Friend of a Friend<\/strong><\/em>] was kind of cobbled together.\u201d Rawlings<\/strong> added: \u201cThere\u2019s an easy way for me to look at this as the first record that we\u2019ve made, really\u2013the first \u2018Machine\u2019 record.\u201d<\/p>\n
