Blame it on <strong>Kendrick Lamar<\/strong>. \u00a0While <strong>Lamar&#8217;s<\/strong> <em><strong>To Pimp A Butterfly<\/strong> <\/em>was the best, most-important album of 2015, <em><strong>Return to the Moon<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0was easily our favorite, most-listened-to album of 2015. \u00a0The variety and depth in the album&#8217;s songs is astonishing, thanks in no small part to the teeming musical mind of <strong>Brent Knopf<\/strong>. \u00a0The songs range from <strong>Joy Division<\/strong>-like post-punk tracks to <strong>National<\/strong>-esque ballads, with everything in between. And all feature <strong>Matt Berninger&#8217;s<\/strong> alternately hilarious and devastating lyrics that limn life well, but all-the-while permitting\/encouraging the listener to sing the words into their own lives. \u00a0Like the best lyrics always do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EL VY<\/strong> was also fantastic live, as witnessed by us at the <strong>Troubadour<\/strong> in LA. \u00a0Below on their <strong>Tiny Desk Concert<\/strong> we get a great three-song sampling of the core of <strong>EL VY&#8217;s<\/strong> songs, with just <strong>Knopf&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0expressive piano-playing and <strong>Berninger&#8217;s<\/strong> unadorned vocals and lyrics. \u00a0It&#8217;s a powerful combination. \u00a0We hope that time will permit these two to collaborate again in the not-too-distant future.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C5EjS_ZEE_I\" width=\"625\" height=\"425\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EL VY&#8217;s album Return to the Moon was our Favorite Album of 2015, and would have been No. 1 on our Best Albums of 2015 list (where&#8217;d that list go, it was here just a minute ago?).
