{"id":2596,"date":"2010-10-06T22:07:19","date_gmt":"2010-10-06T22:07:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=2596"},"modified":"2010-10-08T00:46:55","modified_gmt":"2010-10-08T00:46:55","slug":"hardly-strictly-arcade-fire-four-days-of-overload-days-2-and-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-10\/hardly-strictly-arcade-fire-four-days-of-overload-days-2-and-12\/","title":{"rendered":"Hardly Strictly Arcade Fire&#8211;Four Days of Overload (Days 2 and 1\/2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the fine Soho show on Thursday, we hopped in the car and drove up to San Luis Obispo for some college\/family time and managed to hit the phenomenal <a href=\"http:\/\/booboorecords.com\/\">Boo Boo Records<\/a> in that fine town.\u00a0 Boo Boo is one of the best record stores still extant, with great listening stations, staff picks, used CDs and a vast selection of all genres and media.\u00a0 Please stop by and support this fine establishment when in San Luis Obispo.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving SLO, we drove up the 101 with the windows down under seriously sashaying sunset skies.\u00a0 We were somewhat embarrassed by California&#8217;s swaggering, supercilious show on the golden-hilled stage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-2600\" title=\"Headed North Sunset\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Headed-North-Sunset2-700x246.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Headed-North-Sunset2-700x246.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Headed-North-Sunset2-150x52.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Headed-North-Sunset2-450x158.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Headed-North-Sunset2.jpg 1728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not unsurprisingly, by the time we hit Gilroy the familiar fog had overtaken the sunset skies.\u00a0 We eventually made San Francisco and were soon ensconced with our friends, The Ferralls, at their fine &#8220;Outer Inner Sunset&#8221; abode.\u00a0 So great to see and meander with them again.<\/p>\n<p>In the morning we walked the 10 minutes to Golden Gate Park and the free 10th annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival (put on by gracious,\u00a0 music-loving, investment-titan Warren Hellman).<\/p>\n<p>We met up with Santa Barbarans, John Hawkes and new partner-in-music-addiction Art Tracewell, and prepared to be overindulged (strictly musically speaking).\u00a0 We immediately had a good flavor for the proceedings with the seating choices and the 11am hip-flask-hippie surroundings.\u00a0 The crowds were manageable at this juncture, but as the day wore on we were somewhat taken aback by the enormity of the crowds.\u00a0 We guess it&#8217;s not hard to figure, though, given the impressive line-ups and the fact that admission was, oh say,\u00a0 free (everything is free these days, isn&#8217;t it??).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-2603\" title=\"Nice Ride\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nice-Ride-464x650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"464\" height=\"650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nice-Ride-464x650.jpg 464w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nice-Ride-107x150.jpg 107w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nice-Ride-285x400.jpg 285w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nice-Ride.jpg 1538w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We arrived just in time for Kelly Willis&#8217; set and were quickly immersed in the warm, big sound of Willis and her band, and her measured and stirring songs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-2602\" title=\"KWillis\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/KWillis-700x620.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"562\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/KWillis-700x620.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/KWillis-150x132.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/KWillis-450x398.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/KWillis.jpg 1728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We then set off for Trombone Shorty&#8217;s set and along the way enjoyed some of the fans who were multi-tasking (but not shorting) while Trombone Shorty slayed the audience with his updated R&amp;B sound via New Orleans, and his phenomenal trombone and trumpet talents.\u00a0 Will knit for Shorty.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-2614\" title=\"Knitting for Shorty\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Knitting-for-Shorty1-515x650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Knitting-for-Shorty1-515x650.jpg 515w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Knitting-for-Shorty1-119x150.jpg 119w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Knitting-for-Shorty1-317x400.jpg 317w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Knitting-for-Shorty1.jpg 1411w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here was T-Shorty on Letterman a few months ago:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Trombone Shorty &amp; Orleans Avenue - &quot;One Night Only&quot; 6\/22 Letterman (TheAudioPerv.com)\" width=\"635\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1qlYIQgvC-k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Then it was off to hear Jon Langford (leader of the great Mekons) and then the Carolina Chocolate Drops.\u00a0 The Chocolate Drops proved to be one of the highlights of the entire Festival weekend with their incredibly impressive musicological variety and acumen.\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 They do it all and won the crowd over with their bluegrass, soul, Scottish folk and various other stylings and instruments (kazoo, you name it), not to mention the great dancing of Rhiannon Giddens.\u00a0 Check out some their stuff below.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carolina Chocolate Drops performing &quot;Hit &#039;Em Up Style&quot;\" width=\"635\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wKTXJUYiAT4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2616\" title=\"Baez\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Baez.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Baez.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Baez-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Baez-450x337.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then Joan Baez came on and it was Flashback City for many.\u00a0 You could close your eyes and imagine you were back in the 60s in San Francisco and what it was like to be present in that epoch, especially when that hippie on your left blew a sweet-smelling cumulus cloud your way.\u00a0 Joan sounded and looked younger than her years, and reeled off many great songs from her songbook (though disappointed by not doing <em>The Night They Drive Old Dixie Down <\/em>or <em>Love is Just a Four-Letter Word)<\/em>.\u00a0 The highlight of her set for us was her wonderful, wistful song, <em>Diamonds and Rust, <\/em>which is her reminiscences of headier times in and out of relationship with Bob Dylan.\u00a0 She closed her set with Dylan&#8217;s own <em>Don&#8217;t Think Twice, It&#8217;s All Right,<\/em> even intentionally mimicking Dylan&#8217;s vocal stylings to great effect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2634\" title=\"Gillian-Welch-HSBluegrass-2006\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gillian-Welch-HSBluegrass-2006.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gillian-Welch-HSBluegrass-2006.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gillian-Welch-HSBluegrass-2006-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next up were Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, normally one of the highlights of any day or night of music.\u00a0 The sound men just weren&#8217;t on their game this set, however, and a low-end hum detracted measurably from a great set of crowd favorites.\u00a0 David Rawlings continues to be our favorite living guitarist for his soulful, skilled playing and arpeggios, and he did not disappoint this day.\u00a0 It was great to see choir-boy Rawlings (one of the nicest men on the planet as far as we can tell) lose his cool, and walk over to the sound guys and rightfully blast them for minutes-on-end for their incompetence.\u00a0 Though the sound and machinations somewhat diluted the effect of their set, Gillian&#8217;s songs and Rawlings&#8217; guitar-playing and harmonies ultimately won out, capped off by the stirring <em>I Hear Them All<\/em> that segued into <em>This Land is Your Land. <\/em>Listening to 200,000+ people singing Woody Guthrie&#8217;s epic song was truly moving to our ears.\u00a0 Also great was Conor Oberst&#8217;s inclusion for his song <em>Lua, <\/em>which can be viewed below.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, and Conor Oberst - Lua\" width=\"635\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h_dzhGjJ7XQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
