The relentless rummage has been wasting our time and fracking our focus. In a rare moment of clarity, we submit that Laney Jones’ <\/a><\/strong>(<\/a>and The Spirit<\/a>‘s<\/strong>) self-titled album is easily one of the Best Albums of 2016<\/strong>. We confess our clarity was triggered by today’s release of their tranquillo video for the album’s\u00a0Who Could Love\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(see below, with lyrics at bottom).<\/p>\n

After catching Jones &<\/strong>\u00a0The Spirit’s<\/strong> superb live act, we featured their Zika-catchy song Allston (Dance Around)<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, and vowed to give the album its greater due.\u00a0Three months later,\u00a0we confirm that we had it right all along. The brilliant album has a broad and varied pallet that bears repeated listening and argues that Jones<\/strong> and her songwriting partner,\u00a0Matthew Tonner<\/strong>, might be the next Lennon-McCartney, Jagger-Richards, Goffin-King<\/strong> or (the other) Jones-Strummer\u00a0<\/strong>(OK, that might be minor hyperbole, but time will tell–don’t bet against them).<\/p>\n

The album’s deceptively simple-sounding (but clandestinely-complex) songs are gems that will transport you. In addition to the great songwriting, vocals and playing, David Plakon<\/strong> has appropriately-framed the group with his deft production.<\/strong>\u00a0Favorite songs include the sepia-toned Do What You Want<\/strong><\/em>, the Wilco<\/strong>-esque Bad Luck Charm<\/strong><\/em>, the ebullient Work It Out<\/strong><\/em>, the swaggering and audacious Firewalk<\/strong> <\/em>(with it’s gripping off-count delays), the endearingly-confessional Lonesome Soul<\/strong><\/em>, the powerful The Simple Truth<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and the seasonally-apropos Endless Summer<\/strong><\/em>. That’s right–there’s not a bad song on the album. Do yourselves a favor and go pick up the album\u00a0HERE<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
