When the standard \u201cMostly Highly Anticipated Albums of the Year<\/strong>\u201d lists came out early in the year, we were left scratching our heads. Was it really possible that the\u00a0hinted-at new album from Feist<\/strong><\/a>, one the best artists of our generation, would not make any of these lists?!\u00a0<\/strong>You’re kidding, right?\u00a0Nope. No mention was made of Feist’s <\/strong>album\u00a0on\u00a0Rolling Stone\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Pitchfork\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Consequence of Sound\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Stereogum\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0A.V. Club\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0lists, to name but a few of the more popular music blogs. We won\u2019t quarrel with some of the questionable artists on those lists (really? Sam Hunt, Little Big Town<\/strong>\u00a0or soul-sucking Marilyn Manson<\/strong>?), but it is unfathomable to us that any such rags would leave Feist<\/strong> off those lists. Maybe a little too much internalized kool-aid is being swilled out there.<\/p>\n

Feist’s<\/strong> album (which ultimately became her outstanding album Pleasure<\/strong><\/em>) has been at the top of our most highly anticipated albums, as has been the foreshadowed album from great Canadian ensemble\u00a0Broken Social Scene<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(not to beat some dead media sites, but it’s worth noting that out of the above-referenced lists only Consequence of Sound<\/strong> included BSS’ <\/strong>album).<\/p>\n

Thankfully news recently broke that Broken Social Scene<\/strong> will release it’s new album Hug of Thunder <\/strong><\/em>on\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>July 7 <\/strong>via City Slang<\/a>\/Arts & Crafts<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. To whet appetites the band first revealed fullsome track Halfway Home<\/strong><\/em> (our Song of The Week<\/strong><\/a>). And now the band has released the title track to the album, which (coincidentally) features Feist<\/strong>. Double the anticipation.<\/p>\n

The new album will feature 17 players including (in addition to Feist<\/strong>) original members Emily Haines<\/strong> and Jimmy Shaw<\/strong> of Metric, Amy Millan <\/strong>and Evan Cranley <\/strong>of Stars, Charles Spearin <\/strong>and Ohad Benchetrit <\/strong>of Do Make Say Think<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With its opening minimalism and Feist’s<\/strong> rhythmically-delivered ruminations, Hug Of Thunder<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(lyrics at bottom) initially sounds as if it would fit pleasurably on Feist’s <\/strong>own\u00a0Pleasure<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(high praise for the song). But as the song progresses BSS<\/strong> does its thing and adds on multiple layers of vocals, psychedelic sonics and warming effects to give it grandeur. Bravo!<\/p>\n
