It’s been a big Elbow<\/strong><\/a> week at Chez Lefort. <\/strong>First this magnificently-talented\u00a0band put out a sonorous\u00a0Beatles<\/strong> cover and performed a great set on <\/a>KCRW<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And today the band appeared\u00a0on CBS This Morning<\/strong> and gave lush performances of Magnificent (She Says)<\/strong><\/em> and All Disco<\/strong><\/em> off the Best Album of 2017<\/strong> contender Little Fiction<\/strong><\/em>s, along with fan-favorite rocker Grounds For Divorce<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0Check ’em out below in all their stellar-sounding magnificence! At bottom is an interview with Guy Garvey<\/strong> and Pete Turner<\/strong> in which Garvey<\/strong> recounts receiving a laudatory email from Sir\u00a0Paul McCartney<\/strong> regarding Magnificent (She Says)<\/strong><\/em>. If it’s good enough for Paul McCartney<\/strong>, it’s good enough for you and me!<\/p>\n

Today’s CBS<\/strong> performances follow on the heals of their superb U.S.-tour-ending show at the Wiltern Theater<\/strong><\/em> in LA on Thursday. Just as they had in 2014 at the Wiltern<\/strong><\/a>, the band was phenomenal throughout the show, thankfully matched by an adoring sing-along crowd. Once again it was a perfect match of band and venue, and the mutual affection was palpable. Guy Garvey<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the more charismatic and gifted singers extant, and had the crowd in the palm of his ever-outstretched hand. With a wink and a nod, and queries to the balcony, he made all feel involved and at home. The superb band members\u00a0Craig Potter<\/strong> (keyboard, piano, backing vocals), Mark Potter<\/strong> (guitar, backing vocals), Pete Turner<\/strong> (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Alex Reeves<\/strong> (drums), were on serious form throughout and were\u00a0fleshed out superbly with the addition of two sylvan string players\/back-up singers.<\/p>\n

Highlights from their set included the fantastic new songs Magnificent (She Says)<\/strong><\/em>, All Disco<\/strong><\/em>, and Little Fictions<\/strong><\/em>, along with\u00a0older stalwarts including Mirrorball<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0Lippy Kids, My Sad Captains, New York Morning<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and (of course) the set-closing One Day Like This<\/strong><\/em>. The band closed out the night with a raucous, floor-shaking romp with\u00a0Grounds For Divorce.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Our only complaint was that the sound in the pit was very muddled, in stark contrast to the crystal-clear sound on CBS This Morning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
