Virtually everything that the members of Bon Iver<\/strong><\/a> and The National<\/strong><\/a> touch turns to musical gold. Both those bands are, for us, at the top of the indie-rock realms. And when their members step out and collaborate with others, more magic ensues. Whether via Bon Iver’s<\/strong>\u00a0Justin Vernon’s<\/strong>\u00a0varied productions or his collaborations in Volcano Choir<\/strong><\/a> or Sean Carey’s<\/strong><\/a> soaring solo recordings, or via The National’s<\/strong>\u00a0Matt Berninger’s<\/strong> El Vy<\/strong><\/a> project or the Dessner Twins’<\/strong> various projects and productions, these members consistently create fecund musical fields and savory song harvests. Vernon’s<\/strong> and Aaron Dessner’s<\/strong> new project Big Red Machine<\/strong><\/a> is yet another example.<\/p>\n

Ramping up a collaboration that began eons ago (via the Big Red Machine<\/strong><\/em> song included in the\u00a0Dark Was The Night<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0fundraiser) Vernon<\/strong> and The National\u2019s Aaron Dessner<\/strong> have today released The Big Red Machine’s<\/strong> debut album that once again inflames the ineffable (with inevitable f-ables). Vernon<\/strong> and Dessner<\/strong> have repeatedly collaborated before. They founded the\u00a0Eaux Claires Festival<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and recently developed (with Bryce Dessner<\/strong>) a new music\/artist platform dubbed PEOPLE<\/strong><\/a>, which seeks to further artistic collaboration. Now comes Big Red Machine<\/strong><\/em>. And we’re all in.<\/p>\n

The album reflects both Bon Iver’s<\/strong> and The National’s<\/strong> recent entreaties to electronica, but still features Vernon’s<\/strong> affecting, post-Expressionist lyrics, guitar plenitude and melodies befitting of both bands. The luminous list of participants is similarly impressive:\u00a0Bryce Dessner,\u00a0Arcade Fire\u2019s Richard Reed Parry, <\/strong>the unjustly unsung Lisa Hannigan<\/a>, <\/strong>fulgent Phoebe Bridgers<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0the earth-eclipsing harmonists\u00a0The Staves<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0and This is the Kit\u2019s<\/a> Kate Stables<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To match the release of their eponymous album, Big Red Machine<\/strong> has delivered videos for three of our favorite songs off the album: Forest Green, Gratitude <\/strong><\/em>and the comparatively folkified\u00a0I Won’t Run From It<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0Forest Green\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is a particular highlight, with its emotionally propelling bass-line and Vernon’s<\/strong>\u00a0enigmatic lyrics that can’t help but tug the heartstrings. Who doesn’t want to give or receive more time?\u00a0The inventive videos were directed by Eric Timothy Carlson<\/strong> and Aaron Anderson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
