{"id":3555,"date":"2010-12-18T22:28:06","date_gmt":"2010-12-18T22:28:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=3555"},"modified":"2011-03-28T21:22:10","modified_gmt":"2011-03-28T21:22:10","slug":"the-year-in-music-the-year-in-song-part-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-12\/the-year-in-music-the-year-in-song-part-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"The Year in Music, The Year in Song (Part II)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>The Top 40 Songs of 2010 With Soul<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The following were the songs that dominated our playlist in 2010.\u00a0 Except for two exceptional cases, we purposefully limited bands to one song on the list in order to spread the wealth and under the theory that many of the bands whose other songs might have warranted inclusion had already received world-wide recognition via our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-12\/the-year-in-music-the-year-in-song-2010-part-i\/\"><strong> Top 11 Albums of 2010<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a joke, son, but them&#8217;s the guidelines.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>1. <\/strong><\/em><strong><em>The Suburbs<\/em><em>&#8212;<\/em><\/strong><strong><strong>Arcade Fire<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You could pick just about any song off of Arcade Fire&#8217;s Album of the Year, &#8220;The Suburbs,&#8221; whether it be <em>Suburban War, Deep Blue, We Used to Wait, Sprawl II, <\/em>or <em>The Suburbs (continued)<\/em>, or whichever song sent you running from the suburbs. \u00a0We&#8217;ll go with the piano-driven title track, which set the tone for all that would follow.\u00a0 <em>The Suburbs<\/em> came\u00a0delivered in the cool new and inventive player below. \u00a0All hail Arcade Fire.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse (in homage to the self-dubbed &#8220;Dean of American Rock Critics,&#8221; Robert Christgau, though he overlooks Greil Marcus) :\u00a0 &#8220;Grab your mother&#8217;s keys, we&#8217;re leavin&#8217;&#8230;I&#8217;m movin&#8217; past the feeling and into the night.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"520\" height=\"555\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"data\" value=\"http:\/\/embed.arcadefire.com\/widget\/ArcadeFire_Vinyl.swf?v=full\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/embed.arcadefire.com\/widget\/ArcadeFire_Vinyl.swf?v=full\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"520\" height=\"555\" src=\"http:\/\/embed.arcadefire.com\/widget\/ArcadeFire_Vinyl.swf?v=full\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" data=\"http:\/\/embed.arcadefire.com\/widget\/ArcadeFire_Vinyl.swf?v=full\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>2. <\/em><em>Terrible Love (Alternative Take)<\/em>&#8211;The National<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3541\" title=\"High Violet\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/High-Violet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/High-Violet.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/High-Violet-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here again, you could have taken virtually any song off of their fine album, &#8220;High Violet.&#8221; \u00a0But we&#8217;ll gloss over <em>Afraid of Everyone, Anyone&#8217;s Ghost, England, Bloodbuzz Ohio, Lemonworld, England <\/em>and <em>Conversation 16, <\/em>and go with the alternate take of <em>Terrible Love<\/em> that was released well after the album&#8217;s release. \u00a0They got it really right this time and better-conveyed the sound of the song live. \u00a0Check out the video below of the song, which gives a good flavor for the band and their live show. \u00a0And then listen again while not watching. Vesuvius<\/em>&#8211;Sufjan Stevens<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3543\" title=\"Age of Adz\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Age-of-Adz.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Age-of-Adz.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Age-of-Adz-150x134.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From an album (&#8220;Age of Adz&#8221;) that gave us so many great songs (yes even the 25-minute <em>Impossible Soul<\/em>), including <em>I Walked<\/em> and<em> Too Much, <\/em>we&#8217;ll go with <em>Vesuvius. <\/em> Sufjan Stevens 2.0 is conveyed perfectly in this song. \u00a0It starts sounding like the old &#8220;banjo-and-hush&#8221; Sufjan, and then slowly moves into the new Sufjan motif, along the way tossing in Paul Simon-esque flutes and eventually blazing the repeated choruses and the singer&#8217;s new battle cry.\u00a0 Levitation then follows.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;Sufjan, follow your heart, follow the flame, or fall in the floor.&#8221;<\/p>\n[audio:https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/08-Vesuvius.mp3|titles=08 Vesuvius]\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong><strong><em> When We Were Young<\/em><strong>&#8211;Hosannas<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3551\" title=\"Together\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Together.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Together.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Together-150x135.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We raved about this song <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-09\/when-we-were-younger-new-hosannas\/\"><strong>previously<\/strong><\/a> and we&#8217;re sticking to rave.\u00a0 The band and producer John Askew nailed the updated-Joy Division-meets-Go-Go&#8217;s gestalt. \u00a0It&#8217;s all there: \u00a0the Joy Division synth, drum and bass backdrop, slathered with Brandon Laws&#8217; glorious, first-chair guitar.\u00a0 Hosannas in the highest.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational verse:\u00a0 \u201cWhen we were young we would move to this beat; I guess we would move \u2019cause we needed release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>[audio:https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/When-We-Were-Young.mp3|titles=When We Were Young]<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><em>5.\u00a0 Fireplace&#8211;<\/em>Lost in the Trees<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3635\" title=\"Lost in the trees\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lost-in-the-trees.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lost-in-the-trees.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lost-in-the-trees-150x135.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is another great song that we hailed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-09\/lost-in-the-trees-but-we-can-stand\/\">earlier<\/a> <\/strong>by Lost in The Trees, the up-and-coming Chapel Hill band.\u00a0We&#8217;re adhering to our earlier accolades.\u00a0 The jury&#8217;s still out on this band long-term since not every song on their first album can carry the weight and worth of this song, which is an anthem for the ages.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 \u201cCut the weight of what is too sharp to hold. So surround yourself with good people. What Did My Lover Say?&#8211;Wolf Parade<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3654\" title=\"n83630vu6gj\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/n83630vu6gj2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/n83630vu6gj2.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/n83630vu6gj2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Wolf Parade song came blasting into our ears in September and stayed in replay rotation for months. \u00a0And still it persists. \u00a0And to think we originally thought this was a Killers\/Brandon song. \u00a0As we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-10\/wolf-parade-one-ups-the-killers-and-brandon-flowers\/\"><strong>said in October<\/strong><\/a>, we loved the chorus and the stanza which Spencer Krug ends at 2:53 with his mocking &#8220;la la lala la la lala!!&#8221; \u00a0That&#8217;s voracious verve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Inspirational Verse: \u00a0&#8220;I got a friend who&#8217;s a genius, nobody listens to him, I got some friends that got famous, la la lala la la lala!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><strong>[audio:https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/07-What-Did-My-Lover-Say-It-Always-Had-To-Go-This-Way.mp3|titles=07 What Did My Lover Say (It Always Had To Go This Way)]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>7. Numbers Don&#8217;t Lie&#8211;<\/strong><\/em><strong>Mynabirds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3645\" title=\"n76646pbtum\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/n76646pbtum.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/n76646pbtum.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/n76646pbtum-150x135.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">This song by The Mynabirds kicked off summer for us with its throwback piano, soul, a bit of grit, and vocals that recalled Dusty Springfield, Bobbie Gentry and other 60s singers. \u00a0And all of it was given the perfect setting by rising producer Richard Swift (Damien Jurado, etc.).<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;<\/span><\/strong>You said, &#8216;One and one and one and one is three,&#8217; But I know my lines and my graphs and my math, Honey that ain&#8217;t me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>[audio:https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Numbers-Dont-Lie1.mp3|titles=Numbers Don&#8217;t Lie]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>8. src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gorilla-Manor1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gorilla-Manor1.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gorilla-Manor1-150x137.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Local Natives have escaped and gone world-wide this year, receiving huzzahs from around the indie globe.\u00a0 We agree and had confirmation when they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-09\/locals-and-natives-speaking-the-love-language\/\"><strong>came to town in September<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 <em>Camera Talk <\/em>is just one of many great pop songs off of &#8220;Gorilla Manor.&#8221;\u00a0 But it&#8217;s the first that caught our intention.\u00a0 We loved the inventive song structure and harmonized chorus.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;We&#8217;ll all be leaving with a broken heart, wallets empty and we&#8217;re back at More<\/em><em>&#8212;<\/em>Sharon Van Etten<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3646\" title=\"o37673d7bo2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/o37673d7bo2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"179\" Etten<\/strong><\/a> until November.\u00a0 But this epic song grabbed us by the lapels and compelled us to listen.\u00a0 Anything even remotely related to The Antlers is alright by us.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;And she took the time to believe in, to believe in what she said, and she made me love she made me love she made me love You&#8217;re Not Alone<\/strong><\/em><strong>&#8211;Mavis Staples<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3647\" title=\"o28580l4ts8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/o28580l4ts8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/o28580l4ts8.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/o28580l4ts8-150x136.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mavis Staples got hold of Jeff Tweedy (or vice versa) and the two lifted each other on <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-09\/mavis-and-tweedy-together-not-alone\/\"><strong>a great record<\/strong><\/a> this year.\u00a0 The title song, written by Tweedy,\u00a0 is emblematic of the worth of this joint venture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;<span>A broken home, a broken heart, isolated and afraid, open up, this is a raid, I wanna get it through to you, you\u2019re not alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>[audio:https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/You_Are_Not_Alone.mp3|titles=You_Are_Not_Alone]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>11. <em>Baby Birch&#8211;<\/em>Joanna Newsom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3545\" title=\"Have One on Me\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Have-One-on-Me.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Have-One-on-Me.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Have-One-on-Me-150x146.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year we received a majestic three-disc album from Joanna Newsom and then caught and were <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-07\/visions-of-joanna\/\"><strong>enraptured by her performance<\/strong><\/a> in July at the Lobero.\u00a0 Newsom&#8217;s talent, compositions and delivery are awe-inspiring.\u00a0 She is this generation&#8217;s enfante terrible.\u00a0 She&#8217;s also not the first you think of when you think of songs of the year because of her song-lengths and complex and difficult compositions.\u00a0 But we couldn&#8217;t keep her off the list.\u00a0 <em>Baby Birch <\/em>is representative of Newsom&#8217;s great songs and at 6:22 takes off and cries pop-song wolf.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;\u201cWhen it was dark, I called and you came, When it was dark, I saw shapes, When I see stars, I feel, in your hand, and I see <em>Odessa&#8211;<\/em>Caribou<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3663\" title=\"Caribou\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Caribou.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Caribou.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Caribou-148x150.jpg 148w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Caribou offered up post-modern, re-imagined disco with aplomb this year.\u00a0 Their song, <em>Odessa, <\/em>set the standard in that genre despite its downcast lyrics.<span> On <em>Odessa<\/em> we hear their updated disco with added squawking-vocal effects, scratch- guitar, and polyrhythmic triangle\/cowbell\/wood playing, and all anchored by a bounteous bassline. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal<\/w:View> <w:Zoom>0<\/w:Zoom> <w:PunctuationKerning \/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas \/> album<\/strong><\/a> this year, and though there were some other song contenders from &#8220;Here&#8217;s To Taking It Easy,&#8221; the song, <em>The Mermaid Parade, <\/em>paraded its wares more than the other song-floats.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;Now our hearts were on fire, Only two weeks ago, And our bodies were like live wires, Down on the beach in Mexico, But I came back to this city, And you stayed home in LA, And then our two years of marriage, In two short weeks somehow just slipped (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We were presently surprised when we caught Australia&#8217;s The Middle East open at shows on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-04\/middle-east-beach-house-too\/\"><strong>consecutive nights in April<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Their live act throws strikes right down the middle, and we were duly impressed.\u00a0 Especially impressive is their song <em>Blood<\/em> and it&#8217;s tales of lives and loss and resolve.\u00a0 But <em>Blood <\/em>must be seen live to fully appreciate it.\u00a0 There are moments in the song when they even match Arcade Fire&#8217;s grandeur with their horns and strings blazing.\u00a0 We especially like the spectral chorus beginning at 3:24.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;And you&#8217;ll find somebody you can blame, and you&#8217;ll follow the creek that runs out into the sea, and you&#8217;ll find the peace of the href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-08\/typhoon-hits-the-west-coast\/\"><strong>stormed onto our jukebox<\/strong><\/a>. Opening song, <em>Starting<\/em> <em>Over,<\/em> started the proceedings well with its sparseness, harmonies (at 1:21 for example), entry of the  horns (at 2:06) and build, and then abrupt back-off.\u00a0 Dynamism.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;<span>I left the car running, in the case that I hear, the cavalry extraordinary chords and key changes, with Shins-esque vocals thrown in intermittently and superb musicianship that belies their young ages.\u00a0 There are a bevy of great songs on their eponymous debut record, but <em>What&#8217;s In It For? <\/em>gives a great glimpse of this band and into its future.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;I can read but I won&#8217;t if I&#8217;m &#8220;epic.&#8221;\u00a0 Van Etten holds great promise for the future, and we will be sure to keep track of her.\u00a0 <em>Don\u2019t Do It<\/em> smacks of a desperate plea to a downtrodden soul  (\u201cLook me in the eyes, say you can\u2019t do it\u201d).\u00a0 <em> <\/em>Van Etten sings well of the pain and frustration, ultimately ending in resigned resolve (\u201cI wish I could make you right\u201d).\u00a0 And all the while, the song builds and builds.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;Want to take you outside, want to show you the sky, to remind you why you
