{"id":3582,"date":"2010-12-27T16:30:32","date_gmt":"2010-12-27T16:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=3582"},"modified":"2011-01-02T18:05:40","modified_gmt":"2011-01-02T18:05:40","slug":"the-year-in-music-the-year-in-song-part-iii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-12\/the-year-in-music-the-year-in-song-part-iii\/","title":{"rendered":"The Year in Music, The Year in Song (Part III)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Top 12 Concerts of 2010<\/h1>\n<p>With respect to the concert scene in 2010, it was an embarrassment of riches, and we got out to a couple or two shows this year.\u00a0 Not surprisingly, many of the best concerts were delivered by musicians that we had yearned for years to see live, but had not managed to see before. The following were the highlights of this habitual adrenalized, soul-seeking anodyne known as &#8220;the concert.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong><strong>Thom Yorke at the Santa Barbara Bowl<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-04\/yorke-town\/\"><strong>Thom, Flea and the lads lit it up (literally and figuratively) in April at our great Bowl, once again making Santa Barbara Yorke-town<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Yeah, we&#8217;d prefer a whole Radiohead, the best live band extant on the planet, but we&#8217;ll &#8220;settle&#8221; for Thom Yorke&#8217;s tantalizing musical trills and dance tantrums any day of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a glimpse of the Bowl show (<em>Videotape<\/em>, solo piano), and below it a representative segment (<em>Cymbal Rush<\/em> from Coachella). \u00a0But perhaps best is the video at bottom of the title track of his solo album, &#8220;Eraser,&#8221; done live at the &#8220;secret&#8221; Echoplex shows from 2009. \u00a0Check out Nigel Goodrich&#8217;s fine harmony vocals. \u00a0Yorke (together with Goodrich and the rest of the Radiohead regality) is simply <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the<\/span> creative musical titan of the last decade (at a minimum). \u00a0We&#8217;ve yet to witness a false musical move.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Thom Yorke - Videotape (Atoms For Peace, Santa Barbara 04.17.2010)\" width=\"635\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gZCkrws0Exg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0 Arcade Fire&#8211;Berkeley Greek Theater<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We had never seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-10\/hardly-strictly-arcade-fire-four-days-of-overload-days-3-and-4\/\"><strong>Arcade Fire live before this show at the Greek<\/strong><\/a>, which fulfilled all our expectations and then some.<\/p>\n<p>Check out their show-stopping (literally) performance of <em>Wake Up <\/em>below.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GGdyG_83nX4&#038;feature=player_embedded<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0 The National&#8211;Wiltern Theater <\/strong>(Hollywood)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In May we were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-05\/chills-and-spills-the-national-at-the-wiltern-522\/\"><strong>Nationalized once again<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 The National delivered their best album of their careers and continue to evolve as a band live (which we thought impossible after their shows in prior years).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The National - Mr. November (Live Director\ufffds Cut)\" width=\"635\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vPiF2v7zIww?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0 Pavement&#8211;Fox Theater <\/strong>(Pomona)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We had waited forever to see Pavement, and they did not disappoint at the Fox Theater despite the built up expectations.\u00a0 The reunited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-04\/pounding-the-pavement\/\"><strong>Pavement gave it their all<\/strong><\/a>, and we were mesmerized.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pavement: Starlings of the Slipstream (Fox Theater, Pomona 4-15-10)\" width=\"635\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CagzpAuwP1k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>5.\u00a0 Avett Brothers&#8211;Arlington Theater<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We caught the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-04\/ive-been-from-here-to-salina-kansas\/\"><strong>Avett Brothers at the Arlington in April<\/strong><\/a>, and were blown away by the power and poignancy of their live act.\u00a0 Not to be missed.\u00a0 These boys have heart and soul for days.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Avett Brothers &quot;I and Love and You&quot; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aE7rkSELM3I&#038;feature=related<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.\u00a0 Sufjan Stevens&#8211;Paramount Theatre (Oakland)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We traveled to Oakland to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-10\/the-adz-are-against-that-ole-banjo-sufjan-stevens-at-the-paramount-theatre\/\"><strong>Sufjan for the first time<\/strong><\/a> and were not disappointed (sure, we would have liked a couple more of the banjo-and-hush era songs, but hey).\u00a0 Sufjan and his entourage of sprites and merry men filled the Paramount with glorious sound.\u00a0 All hail the new Sufjan!<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"600\" height=\"361\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/static.photobucket.com\/player.swf?file=http:\/\/vid401.photobucket.com\/albums\/pp94\/theaudiopervjr\/sufjanstevensfallon.mp4\" \/><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"600\" height=\"361\" src=\"http:\/\/static.photobucket.com\/player.swf?file=http:\/\/vid401.photobucket.com\/albums\/pp94\/theaudiopervjr\/sufjanstevensfallon.mp4\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" wmode=\"transparent\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong>7.\u00a0 Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros&#8211;Lobero Theater and Soho<\/strong> (in that order)<\/p>\n<p>Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros doubled up on Santa Barbara, and we benefited greatly from the other Musical Manson and his band of beatific beauties.\u00a0 We were introduced to their live show at Soho in March and then, as hard as it was to imagine (and overcoming our skepticism), they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-07\/the-sharpest-tools-in-the-soul-shed\/\"><strong>took their act to a higher plane in July at the Lobero<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t miss &#8217;em next time.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EDWARD SHARPE &amp; THE MAGNETIC ZEROS - 40 DAY DREAM LIVE @ THE REGENT\" width=\"635\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h0RQnGhxZzg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>8.\u00a0 Joanna Newsom&#8211;Lobero Theater<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Joanna Newsom brought her jaw-drop-inducing talents to Santa Barbara at the end of July.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-07\/visions-of-joanna\/\"><strong>We caught the show<\/strong><\/a> with our family members that hail from Newsom&#8217;s Nevada City, but who had not seen\/heard her previously.\u00a0 We were all impressed and moved by this enfante terrible.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Joanna Newsom - &#039;81 (Live on Later with Jools Holland)\" width=\"635\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mb5Jp_duKNM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>9.\u00a0 Randy Newman&#8211;Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival (San Francisco)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a year of firsts, this was the first time that we had seen national-musical-treasure, Randy Newman.\u00a0 He had the Hardly Strictly audience (including the Felice Brothers and many other musicians) in the palm of his hand the whole time with his majestic flood of songs from the last 40 years.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Randy Newman - Louisiana 1927\" width=\"635\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/91Eb3FiebTs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
