\nsometimes you can see
\nthe young at a concert or demonstration
\nstaring in a certain way as if
\na giant golden banjo
\nis somewhere sparkling
\njust too far off to hear.
\nThey really didn’t know there was a camera.
\nCross legged on the lawn
\nthey are patiently listening to speeches
\nor the folk singer hunched
\nover his little brown guitar.
\nThey look as tired as the young today.
\nThe calm manner in which their eyes
\njust like the camera rest
\non certain things then move
\nto others shows they know
\nno amount of sunlight
\nwill keep them from growing suddenly older.
\nI have seen the new five dollar bills
\nwith their huge pink hypertrophied numbers
\nin the lower right hand corner and feel
\nexcited and betrayed.
\nWhich things should never change?
\nThe famous cherry trees
\nI grew up under
\ndrop all their brand new buds
\na little earlier each year.
\nNow it’s all over before the festival begins.
\nThe young.
\nMaybe they’ll let us be in their dreams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
