Villa at Soho in Santa Barbara"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Gardens &amp; Villa <\/strong>returned from the road to the welcoming arms of its loyal fans as headliners at <strong>Soho<\/strong> on Wednesday night, and delighted the sold-out audience with an energetic tribal-synth-pop extravaganza that was capped off by their rousing finale encore of Gary Numan&#8217;s 1979 uber-hit, <em><strong>Cars. <\/strong><\/em>The band will continue on tour in support of their new eponymous debut album on Secretly Canandian, which was produced by one of our favorite producers, <strong>Richard Swift<\/strong> (Damien Jurado, Mynabirds).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-5438\" title=\"IMG_1861\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1861-650x510.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1861-650x510.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1861-150x117.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1861-450x353.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>But for us the evening primarily revolved around Portland&#8217;s <strong>Hosannas <\/strong>and their musical magical realism tour.\u00a0 We have been huge fans of this band since we first saw them at Muddy Waters and haven&#8217;t missed any of their Santa Barbara shows since.\u00a0 They made our Best of 2010 lists in albums, songs and concerts, and we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2011-03\/hosannas-coming-to-muddy-waters-on-37\/\"><strong>written much about them on these pages<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 The last two times they played here the band had been stripped down to the Brothers Laws in duo format, and while their songs and talent won out each time, we definitely missed the full band stylee of their first show here.\u00a0 So we were greatly anticipating their opening slot at Soho on Wednesday, and the band did not disappoint.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-5439\" title=\"IMG_1862\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1862-650x468.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1862-650x468.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1862-150x108.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1862-449x324.jpg 449w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Soho floor was barely occupied when Hosannas began their set, but it wasn&#8217;t long before it was packed with a crowd intrigued to know who or what was making such stirring sounds.\u00a0 With their off-center but stunning melodies, unique four-part harmony vocals, Brandon&#8217;s slashing guitar, Richard&#8217;s Zombies-updated keyboards, and the more majestic sound supplied by the additional members (Richard told us they had only played together for a scant six days!), Hosannas enthralled their fans and deservingly won many new converts this evening.\u00a0 They opened with a great re-working of one of last year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-12\/the-year-in-music-the-year-in-song-part-ii\/\"><strong>Best Songs of 2010<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><em>When We Were Young<\/em><\/strong>, and moved through other great songs such as <strong><em>People I Know<\/em><\/strong> and <em><strong>Onward With Bravery<\/strong>. <\/em>Our only complaint was the brevity of the set, but acknowledge the opening-band limits.\u00a0 Look for this band to make big musical waves in the years to come.<\/p>\n<p>Hosannas will end this mini-tour with a show in Portland this Sunday and then head back into the studio with John Askew.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t wait to hear the results.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the band was recently captured at <a href=\"http:\/\/violitionist.com\/\"><strong>Violitionist<\/strong><\/a> performing three songs, including <em>Onward With Bravery<\/em>, which you can check out below.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hosannas - &quot;Onward With Bravery&quot;\" width=\"635\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xhcYtSh_6yE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
