We&#8217;ve been hearing cavalcades of raves for<strong> Anna Calvi<\/strong> for awhile, but until we saw her perform her anthemic song <em><strong>Desire <\/strong><\/em>on <strong>Letterman<\/strong> last night, we were on the fence.\u00a0 (As an aside, <strong>Brian Eno<\/strong> sings background vocals on the studio version of <em>Desire<\/em>.)\u00a0 On Letterman she knocked us clean over onto the Anna Calvi side of that fence.\u00a0 No more sittin&#8217;.\u00a0 Her confidence, stage presence, guitar acumen and vocal talent are commanding.\u00a0 As seen below, Calvi has clearly been influenced by <strong>PJ Harvey<\/strong> (on <em><strong>Desire<\/strong>) <\/em>and<strong> Siouxsie <\/strong>(especially on<em><strong> Blackout<\/strong><\/em>).\u00a0 In the videos below, Calvi seduces on <em><strong>Desire <\/strong><\/em>(while accompanied on harmonium, tympani and drums)<em>, <\/em>blazes on <em><strong>Blackout <\/strong><\/em>(as performed on <strong>Later Live with&#8230;Jules Holland<\/strong>), and plays gripping guitar on <em><strong>Love Won&#8217;t Be Leaving. <\/strong><\/em>And her eyes have it&#8211;she&#8217;s titillatingly terrifying.
