{"id":5820,"date":"2011-08-08T19:24:46","date_gmt":"2011-08-08T19:24:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=5820"},"modified":"2011-08-09T19:34:22","modified_gmt":"2011-08-09T19:34:22","slug":"girls-new-video-drivin-and-cryin-in-the-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2011-08\/girls-new-video-drivin-and-cryin-in-the-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Girls&#8217; New Video&#8211;Drivin&#8217; and Cryin&#8217; in The City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5821\" title=\"phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpg.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpg-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of our musical faves, San Francisco band <strong>Girls<\/strong>, has just released the first video (of the song <em><strong>Vomit) <\/strong><\/em>from their impending new album, <strong>&#8220;Father, Son, Holy Ghost.&#8221; <\/strong>The song itself is a grand kitchen sink of influences with both fuzzy psychedelic and Neil Young-esque guitar, acoustic balladry, Spector-Wall-of-Sound, and a soul-gospel diva ending.\u00a0 After the third listen, we were hooked.\u00a0 The video features a &#8217;65 Mustang cruising the streets of San Francisco (including a night-time drag down an empty Chinatown street, the Stockton Tunnel, etc.) and depicting the singer &#8220;looking &#8217;round for [his] baby.&#8221;\u00a0 The lyrics aren&#8217;t profound, but combined with the music the song and video <strong>did not make us vomit (homage to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrismundell.com\/wp\/category\/didihateit\/\">Chris Mundell&#8217;s stellar movie reviews<\/a>)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The band&#8217;s promo says this about the new album:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Father, Son, Holy Ghost<\/strong> juxtaposes the <strong> pain and beauty, hope and misery, which lie at the heart of gospel  music<\/strong>.\u00a0 According to Owens, \u201cthe title does come from a religious place,  but it\u2019s more about acknowledging the fact that music does have a  spiritual quality you can\u2019t put your finger on.\u201d The 3-piece gospel  choir that accompanies the band on seven of Father, Son, Holy Ghost\u2019s 11  tracks echoes that sentiment.\u00a0 \u201cSome of the earliest songs we learn are  happy and joyous, which is why we sing when we are sad, in a sort of  effort to get back to that place of happiness&#8230;\u201d says Owens.
