The New York Times<\/strong> is exclusively featuring the new video for the new Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks<\/strong> song No One Is (As I Are Am) <\/strong><\/em>in advance of the release of their new album (“Mirror Traffic”<\/strong><\/strong>) <\/strong><\/em>on Tuesday.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n In the Times blurb accompanying the video we learn that Bobbie Gentry’s Ode to Billie Joe <\/strong>inspired the song:<\/p>\n “So if the song in the … video, called \u201cNo One Is (As I Are Am),\u201d seems to evoke Bobbie Gentry\u2019s dusty Delta ballad \u201cOde to Billie Joe,\u201d<\/a> it\u2019s no coincidence: that\u2019s the tune Mr. Malkmus cited as his sonic inspiration for the track. (Though lyrics like \u201cI cannot even do one sit-up, sit-ups are so bourgeoisie\u201d are purely his invention.)<\/p>\n As for what gave rise to the video itself, that remains as mysterious as the unknown item Billy Joe MacAllister threw off the Tallahatchie Bridge in Ms. Gentry\u2019s song. But we are told that, among the adorable children seen running around at the end of the clip, are Mr. Malkmus\u2019s own offspring. So at least things worked out better for him.”<\/p>\n
