{"id":6430,"date":"2011-09-09T16:33:57","date_gmt":"2011-09-09T16:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=6430"},"modified":"2011-09-10T00:13:30","modified_gmt":"2011-09-10T00:13:30","slug":"happy-birthday-to-neko-case-and-get-well-to-jesse-winchester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2011-09\/happy-birthday-to-neko-case-and-get-well-to-jesse-winchester\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Belated Birthday to Neko Case, and Get Well to Jesse Winchester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are huge fans of <strong>Neko Case<\/strong>, whether solo or as a part of super-pop-group, <strong>New Pornographers<\/strong>.\u00a0 She is amongst our most evocative singer-songwriters (lyrics being her particular strength), and a brilliant live performer (our fave instance being her show in the early millennium at the small ole <strong>Brown Derby<\/strong> in LA).\u00a0 We&#8217;ll write more about her another day, but on her birthday check out two videos of one of her mini-masterpieces, <em><strong>I Wish I Was the Moon<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Happy Belated Birthday Neko (yesterday, Sept 8th).<\/p>\n<p>Below the two Neko videos is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2010-04\/jesse-winchester-killing-softly-on-costellos-spectacle-show\/\"><strong>repeat of Jesse Winchester<\/strong><\/a> drawing tears (at 3:12) from Neko in a performance of Winchester&#8217;s love song, <em><strong>Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding,<\/strong><\/em> on Costello&#8217;s spectacular <strong>Spectacle show<\/strong>.\u00a0 As she confesses in <em>I Wish I Was The Moon, <\/em>those tears evince that she carries her &#8220;heart in [her] lap.&#8221;\u00a0 You can see Costello also fighting it off throughout the song until he too is &#8220;finished.&#8221;\u00a0 The performance is proof positive of Jesse Winchester&#8217;s soulful ways.\u00a0 Sadly, in July Winchester posted the following to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jessewinchester.com\/index.html\"><strong> his website<\/strong><\/a>:\u00a0 &#8220;I have been diagnosed with<strong> cancer of the esophagus<\/strong>, and will have to  undergo treatment for the next couple of months.
