Give a good listen you who are transitioning, and young and old parents.<\/p>\n<p>First up is Tom Rush&#8217;s rendering of one of the best growing-up-and-moving-on songs ever written.\u00a0 In Murray McLaughlin&#8217;s &#8220;Child&#8217;s Song,&#8221; a son tells his family it&#8217;s time to leave home.\u00a0 The lyrics are at times devastating (we think of our own when Rush sings from the older son&#8217;s perspective: &#8220;little sister you&#8217;ll have to wait a while to come along&#8221;).\u00a0 But proper perspective and lift are provided as well:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thanks for all you done it may sound hollow<br \/>\nThank you for the good times that we&#8217;ve known<br \/>\nBut I must find my own road now to follow<br \/>\nYou will all be welcome in my home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Listen in.\u00a0 Hate\/have to let &#8217;em go.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Rush&#8211;<em>Child&#8217;s Song<\/em><\/p>\n[audio:https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/10-Childs-Song.mp3|titles=10 Child&#8217;s Song]\n<p>We wonder how much more difficult it became for Rush and McLaughlin to sing this song later in life when their parents were aged.\u00a0 Be mindful transitioners, but all as well.<\/p>\n<p>As a coda, Rush also timely performed &#8220;Child&#8217;s Song&#8221; recently on <a href=\"http:\/\/prairiehome.publicradio.org\/programs\/2010\/05\/29\/\">Prairie Home Companion<\/a> (at 1:43:50).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-863\" title=\"Sinatra\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sinatra.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"124\" height=\"128\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The other song is our favorite performance ever by the great Frank Sinatra.\u00a0 Forgot the swingin&#8217;, finger-snappin&#8217;, Rat-packin&#8217;,\u00a0 upbeat Sinatra (though there&#8217;s a time and a place).\u00a0 We&#8217;ll take Sinatra singing a slow, afflicting song any day.\u00a0 Nobody has sung a song so well while conveying the matters of the heart.<\/p>\n<p>Here, on <em>September of My Years<\/em>, an older Sinatra looks back on his life, and the remorse is palpable, though life&#8217;s resolve carries the day.<\/p>\n<p>As Stan Cornyn captured well on the liner notes regarding the recording session for this record, &#8220;Tonight will not swing.\u00a0 Tonight is for serious&#8230;.He sings of the penny days&#8230;.He sings with perspective&#8230;.He looks back&#8230;.He has lived through two lives, and can sing now of September.\u00a0 Of the bruising days&#8230;.September can be an attitude or an age or a wistful reality.\u00a0 For this man, it is a time of love.\u00a0 A time to sing.\u00a0 A thousand days hath September.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We have repeatedly had to pull ourselves back up after hearing Sinatra&#8217;s phrasing in the lines:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a man, who has never paused at wishing wells<br \/>\nNow I&#8217;m watching children&#8217;s carousels<br \/>\nAnd their laughter&#8217;s music to my ears.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Every time we hear this song, we lament lost opportunities with children, family and friends.\u00a0 Take heed.\u00a0 We&#8217;re striving anew to reduce the lengthy list of possible regrets.<\/p>\n[audio:https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/01-The-September-Of-My-Years.mp3|titles=01 The September Of My Years]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Transitions are going down all over town and earth.\u00a0 It&#8217;s that time of year and life.\u00a0 Here are two all-time great songs that relay relevant perspectives.\u00a0 Even if you&#8217;ve heard before, these are songs worthy of revisiting.
