{"id":8924,"date":"2012-01-23T00:05:05","date_gmt":"2012-01-23T08:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=8924"},"modified":"2016-04-03T06:11:30","modified_gmt":"2016-04-03T14:11:30","slug":"the-year-in-music-the-best-70-songs-of-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2012-01\/the-year-in-music-the-best-70-songs-of-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"The Year in Music&#8211;The Best 70 Songs of 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>The Best 70 Songs of 2011<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A bit late, but c&#8217;est la vie.\u00a0 The following were the songs that dominated our playlist in 2011.\u00a0 Except for an exceptional case or two, we purposefully limited bands to one song on the list in order to spread the wealth, all under the theory that many of the bands whose other songs might have warranted inclusion had already received proper recognition via our <strong>Best Albums of 2011 <\/strong>list.<\/p>\n<p>The songs below aren&#8217;t necessarily what you might think of as &#8220;singles,&#8221; but they&#8217;re songs that particularly moved us one way or another. \u00a0 Listed in order of merit, though slightly skewed to the old-world-vision of\u00a0 &#8220;singles&#8221; (and we can&#8217;t definitively explain differences in ranking after about No. 5).\u00a0 Included, where possible, is &#8220;Inspirational Verse&#8221; from each song (in homage to the self-dubbed \u201cDean of American Rock Critics,\u201d Robert Christgau).<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0 Radiohead&#8211;<em>Separator<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9227\" title=\"thekingoflimbs\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/thekingoflimbs1-447x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"447\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/thekingoflimbs1-447x400.jpg 447w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/thekingoflimbs1-150x134.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/thekingoflimbs1-650x580.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/thekingoflimbs1.jpg 1653w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps not as pumped up as some of the songs listed below it, this is simply one of the best songs of all time, with its multiple melody lines and rhythm layers, and the usual deft playing and singing.\u00a0 The melodies sneak in and take over your brain.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 \u201cAnd if you think this is over, then you&#8217;re wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Radiohead&#8211;<em>Separator<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n[audio:https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/08-Separator.mp3|titles=08 Separator]\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0 Foster the People&#8211;<em>Pumped Up Kicks<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Catchier than\u00a0chlamydia in Cambodia, it was the one song that stuck in everyone&#8217;s head this year.\u00a0 We prefer <strong>Weezer&#8217;s version<\/strong> below (until the songwriters get their live act down).<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 None really.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Weezer ~ &quot;Pumped Up Kicks&quot; (Costa Mesa, CA)\" width=\"635\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DJ-grAoireo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Lana Del Rey&#8211;<em>Video Games<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s gonna be huge (despite that <strong>SNL<\/strong> showing), and this one kick-started the campaign, replete with harps and strings.\u00a0 Dreamy, eh?\u00a0 Her first album &#8220;<strong>Born To Die<\/strong>&#8221; will be released at the end of January.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s better than I ever even knew, they say that the world was built for two, only worth living if somebody is loving you, baby, now you do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HO1OV5B_JDw&#038;feature=relmfu<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>MX83&#8211;<em>Midnight City<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another ridiculously catchy song from the French band, <strong>MX83<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse: &#8220;Waiting in the car, waiting for a ride, at night the city grows, look at the horizon glow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"M83 &#039;Midnight City&#039; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>6.\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>TV On the Radio&#8211;<em>Keep Your Heart<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nine Types of Light<\/strong> was filled with great songs, but this one sang to us the most.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;With the world all falling apart, I&#8217;m gonna keep your heart.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RNETlb0MFN8&#038;feature=artist<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Bright Eyes&#8211;<em>Shell Games<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though <em><strong>Ladder Song<\/strong><\/em> is probably the best song on the album, this song has more of the <strong><em>Sugar, Sugar<\/em><\/strong> (with its <strong>Cars<\/strong> gestalt) and is a great status report from <strong>Oberst\/Bright Eyes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;We&#8217;ll be everything that we ever needed, everyone on the count of three, everyone on the count of three, all together now!!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bright Eyes - Shell Games\" width=\"635\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g6MnpD5_4GI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>9.\u00a0 Destroyer&#8211;<\/strong><em><strong>Poor In Love<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kaputt<\/strong> was replete with great songs (<em><strong>Chinatown, Song for America, Suicide Demo,<\/strong><\/em> etc.) , but this one impoverished our listening-time the most.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;I was poor in love, I was poor in wealth, I was okay in everything else there was, oh I was poor in love.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Destroyer - Poor in Love\" width=\"635\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j3bEjqyBA40?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; the Amethysts&#8211;<em>Dreaming<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s <strong>Adam &amp; the Amethysts<\/strong> were big hits in the extended Lefort-family in the last months of the year, and this song was the dreamy introduction to the band.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse:\u00a0 &#8220;If it feels like we&#8217;re dreaming, don&#8217;t wake me.&#8221;<\/p>\n[audio:https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/11-Dreaming.mp3|titles=11 Dreaming]\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>11.\u00a0 Eleanor Friedberger&#8211;<em>My Mistakes<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eleanor Friedberger&#8217;s<\/strong> album, <strong>Last Summer<\/strong>, was a fresh breath of throwback pop from the <strong>Fiery Furnaces&#8217;<\/strong> sister.\u00a0 This song unmistakeably stuck in our ears.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse: &#8220;I thought I&#8217;d learn from my mistakes, I thought he&#8217;d learn from my mistakes, I thought you&#8217;d give me the right advice, I thought he&#8217;d let me in for one last time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Eleanor Friedberger - My Mistakes\" width=\"635\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MRUOoSKt6Kg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; A brace of cheers.<\/p>\n<p>A house of wild accolades<br \/>\nevaporating on an August night<\/p>\n<p>when I&#8217;m looking out into the sound.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m breathing deep. the Jicks&#8211;<em>Share the Red<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stephen Malkmus<\/strong> and crew got back on track this year with their <strong>Beck (Beck!)-<\/strong>produced album,<strong> Mirror Traffic<\/strong>.\u00a0 There are catchier songs off the album, but <em><strong>Share the Red<\/strong><\/em> struck home for us.\u00a0 As usual with Malkmus, the music is challenging, but worth the effort.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational Verse: &#8220;I can see the truth, is wasted on the youth, the parental magic is fading away for now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks performing &quot;Share the Red&quot;
