{"id":9261,"date":"2012-01-26T00:05:16","date_gmt":"2012-01-26T08:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/?p=9261"},"modified":"2012-01-26T07:54:48","modified_gmt":"2012-01-26T15:54:48","slug":"the-deep-dark-woods-straight-outta-saskatoon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/2012-01\/the-deep-dark-woods-straight-outta-saskatoon\/","title":{"rendered":"The Deep Dark Woods&#8211;Straight Outta Saskatoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9275\" title=\"DDS\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/DDS.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/DDS.jpg 434w, https:\/\/www.thelefortreport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/DDS-150x138.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As ye sow, so shall ye reap.\u00a0 We take irrational pleasure in putting out our <strong>Best of Year<\/strong> lists and proselytizing for good music.\u00a0 And of course we enjoy seeing what music others preach on their lists.\u00a0 In the process, magnificence may be unearthed.<\/p>\n<p>Take this year, for example.\u00a0 At year&#8217;s end, we checked the venerable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hearya.com\/\"><strong>HearYa<\/strong><\/a> site and their <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hearya.com\/2011\/12\/13\/best-albums-of-2011-so-far\/\">Best Albums of 2011<\/a><\/strong>, and discovered at <strong>No. 2<\/strong> (behind only the deserving <strong>Other Lives&#8217; Tamer Animals<\/strong>) Saskatoon, Saskatchewan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/thedeepdarkwoods.com\/wp\/\"><strong>The Deep Dark Woods<\/strong><\/a> and their Americana sound.\u00a0\u00a0 And now we can&#8217;t stop listening to the band and their well-rendered odes of woe (with an anti-woe exception or two) on 2011 album, <strong>The Place I Left Behind<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 Devastation and heartbreak await in their songs, but as with the best in this genre the gain is more cathartic-afterglow and marvel than mere misery.\u00a0 The Deep Dark Woods manage to deliver the dark tales with pristine, gorgeous harmonies and precise piano, guitar. banjo and violin embellishments.<\/p>\n<p>While we laud the studio versions of these songs as heard on the album, in many ways we cotton more to the live versions captured by HearYa and others below.\u00a0 Check out the live performances below and then go pick up the album (which is currently available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_19?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-music&amp;field-keywords=the+deep+dark+woods+-+the+place+i+left+behind&amp;sprefix=the+deep+dark+woods%2Cdigital-music%2C257\"><strong>Amazon for $5.00<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>First up is <em><strong>The Banks Of The Leopold Canal<\/strong><\/em> (audio only), which according to HearYa is &#8220;a Canadian soldier\u2019s tale of woe as he\u2019s forced to leave his love for battle in WWII. [Band member] Ryan was inspired to write the song after seeing a special on &#8220;The Battle of the Scheldt&#8221; in which an interviewed soldier was quoted saying \u201cthousands were dead in the Leopold Canal.\u201d\u00a0 Next up is <em><strong>Ballad Of Frank Dupree<\/strong><\/em>, which HearYa advises is &#8220;a fictional song about a man who murders his girl and repents as he faces death by hanging at the gallows.
